Well now Peter Fleischer, Google’s Global Privacy Counsel came forth and announced what course of action they took. Well better late than never, here’s a fragment of his declaration:

“After considering the Working Party’s concerns, we are announcing a new policy: to anonymize our search server logs after 18 months, rather than the previously-established period of 18 to 24 months. We believe that we can still address our legitimate interests in security, innovation and anti-fraud efforts with this shorter period. However, we must point out that future data retention laws may obligate us to raise the retention period to 24 months.â€

So what they’re saying is that they lowered the time logs are kept on their servers from 2 years to 1 year and a half, and not even the the data is not deleted, it’s just “anonymized”. To be frank this is not the kind of response I expected from Google, but I guess they couldn’t just drop all data gathered from users.

I know Google has a lot on its hands lately, such as the recent problems with Google Reader accounts loosing feeds, the launching of the new “View as Slideshow” feature in Gmail and many more, but I think this not something Google can afford to ignore. How Your Computer Finds Websites

Before we start talking about what the Windows Host file is, lets look at how your computer finds websites.

1. You open your web browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox).
2. You type in an address like www.yahoo.com and click enter.
3. Your computer queries the Windows host file for the ip address of yahoo.com This ip address looks like 206.190.60.37.
4. Since your HOSTS file does not have an entry for yahoo.com your computer will query the DNS servers listed in your TCP/IP settings for the ip address of yahoo.com.
5. Your computer gets the ip address for yahoo.com and your browser displays the yahoo.com home page.

So, those 5 steps above are actually a simplistic explanation for how your computer finds and loads a website.

Block Websites With The Windows HOSTS File

Ok, since we now know that our computer looks for websites locally first (in the HOSTS file) we can edit the contents of the HOSTS file so that our PC NEVER goes on the internet to find websites. Sounds sorta confusing huh?

Basically it means every website we add to our hosts file will not load if we set the value of the website to 127.0.0.1 (which is your computer). Here is an example.

Your kids are going to myspace.com a lot and they are picking up all kinds of nasty viruses (yes, many viruses come from myspace.com pages). You need to put a stop to it. Here’s how:

1. Login as Administrator
2. Click Start (or the little globe in the bottom left if on Vista)
3. Click Run (in Vista just type where it say’s “start search”)
4. Type in the word: Drivers. Click Enter.
5. Double Click the Etc folder.
6. Right Click the hosts file, then click properties.
7. Uncheck the read only checkmark if it is checked.
8. Click apply, then click OK.
9. Double Click the hosts file.
10. Windows will ask you to choose the program to open the file with. Click Notepad
11. You will see an extry that looks just like: 127.0.0.1 localhost
12. We are going to add our myspace.com entry below this entry. Type 127.0.0.1 myspace.com
13. Click Save
14. Now, try going to myspace.com….you can’t. You computer thinks that myspace.com resides on your local pc, of course it doesn’t, so the site never loads.
15. Done! Add any other sites or domains you’d like to block.

• Is your text difficult to read? Is text in a multitude of colors or hard to read fonts. Have you got red text on grey for example as your main body text, this can be very difficult to read.
• Do your eyes dart around on the page (information overload) or are you drawn to a specific area? Your page should be streamlined to take the visitor exactly where they want to go (or where you want them to go).
• Does your website take a long time to load pages or animate? People are willing to wait 5-10 seconds for a page, but after that you’re in danger of losing them. Don’t shrink large images in your web page editor as you are still using a very large image, instead crop or resize images to the exact size they will be viewed at before they are uploaded to your site.
• Does your site make distracting noises? That’s so 5 years ago! (maybe 10) so take the noises off your site! Video clips are fine, recorded messages are fine; just don’t insert those annoying rollover sounds whenever your visitors mouse over your links. Think of it as classical conditioning – you’re training your visitors not to click your links because every time they hover over it produces an annoying sound.
• Are you able to update the website? The web is ever changing and your site should be too. Do you have access to at least change the main content and images at a moment’s notice? You should, it’s your website!
• Is your copyright date a year (or more) behind? I understand the argument: “but my site was built in 2005 so shouldn’t I leave that date up there?” The short answer is NO! What you’re doing is making your site look like it hasn’t been updated since 2005. If you’re trying to demonstrate some dependability in your business a good way to do it is by making your date 2005-2009 or something like that.
• Does your site have text that is on top of images making it very hard to read? If you can’t read text over a background image, what’s the point of having the text.
• Do you have an email address with your domain name in the suffix (following the “@” symbol). OK folks, you know who you are… Seriously having a hotmail, gmail, aol, yahoo or any other free domain just looks plain cheap. If there’s no way that you can do without your hotmail address, then forward youremail@yourdomain.com to that gmail account to at least appear a little less cheap.

Recognizing these steps, is the first step on the path to realizing your website’s full potential.

And you simply have to place a line break tag where you want a line of text to stop and begin again on the next line.

Similarly you use a for Underline, for Paragraph and for Italics.

With just a basic understanding of HTML you can build a web page with text, headings, images, splash pages, video, audio, animated graphics, forms, comment boxes, password boxes and much more.
