Plasma televisions are known for having better images and colors than LCD televisions. Unfortunately, they are also known for consuming about twice the energy of LCD TVs and suffering from screen burn-in. This is not a problem, though, with the Panasonic TC-P50S1, which offers the pros of plasma technology with as little of its cons as possible.

Image Quality

Plasma TVs are especially known for their deep black levels, and this is something which the Panasonic TC-P50S1 definitely lives up to. In fact, the black levels displayed on the TC-P50S1 are the deepest produced by Panasonic so far. As for the other colors, they are saturated enough and appear vibrant on the screen, although they fall short in terms of accuracy – a problem common to Panasonic panels. If you look closely, you might notice a slight green tinge on light colors. Then again, this is easy to overlook compared to the excellent shadow detail.

Plasma TVs also produce crisp and clear images even during very fast-moving sequences, which is again something that the TC-P50S1 easily accomplishes. After all, it is equipped with a 600Hz sub-field drive and a patented Full-Time 1080 TV Lines Moving Picture Resolution which prevents fast-moving images from becoming blurry.

Design

Models of the same series usually sport a similar design and like the other S1 models, the TC-P50S1 comes with a sleek, glossy black frame – a frame accentuated by rounded edges and interrupted only by two logos, an indicator light and the power button, which actually blend in nicely. It also has a glossy black stand. It is set apart by one added feature, though – hidden speakers, which also result in a slightly better sound.

Remote Control

The remote control that comes with the TC-P50S1 is also similar to others, but not as good as most since it doesn’t have a backlight. Buttons with different colors, shapes and sizes help make up for this, though, since they can be easily distinguished even in the dark.

Connectivity Options

The Panasonic TC-P50S1 has enough inputs and outputs, though not as much as high-end models. It has three HDMI inputs – two on the back and one on the side. It also has two AV inputs, two component-video inputs, an RF input for your cable or antenna, an SD card slot and a digital audio output, though not a standard analog one. Also, you will need to have an HDMI-capable computer if you want to use this as a monitor since it does not have a VGA input.

Power Consumption

As mentioned earlier, the Panasonic TC-P50S1 does not use up as much electricity as most Plasma TVs. In fact, it qualified for an Energy Star 3.0, which it owes to its new plasma display panel and the low light output of its default or standard picture setting. Naturally, this means lower electric bills and one more reason to love and buy this HDTV.

Other Features

The Panasonic TC-P50S1 also comes with the Viera Link, a feature which allows you to switch on all your HDMI-capable devices, such as your DVD player, Blu-Ray player and surround sound speakers with just the press of a button. It has features to prevent and treat screen burn-in, as well, so you can always have great images on your screen. All these make the Panasonic TC-P50S1 a good HDTV, and definitely one worth considering with its relatively low price.

With picture quality almost to good to believe and colors more vibrant than you’ve ever seen, the Samsung LN46B650 LCD TV is literally a dream come true, if you’ve ever dreamt of owning your very own theatre. In fact, even the sound system is a real killer.

Now I can still remember the first time my parents bought an amazing 21-inch Samsung colored television. I just started high school then and we just started our subscription with a local cable service provider. My siblings and I were so fascinated by the contraption that we often fought over who was going to have the honor of holding the remote control. Well, what did you expect from kids? Anyway, my father was so proud of that thing that he would often wipe it clean almost every night after he got off from work (talk about a disturbing love affair). It was only a simple colored TV, but my family and I sure did have some of the most memorable moments in front of that old tube.

Today, after over a decade, the globally successful and innovative Korean company Samsung has done it again. What did they do? Well, they just made being a couch potato one of the most interesting and pleasurable activities in the world! How did they do that, you ask? Well, they developed the Samsung LN46B650 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV with Red Touch of Color.

Does it sound familiar? Well, do not confuse this with its predecessor, the Samsung LN46A650, because the Samsung LN46B650 is way better than that. Yes, Samsung LN46B650 has most of the same features as the previous model such as the “full HD 1080p Resolution”, “120Hz Auto Motion Plus”, and “4 HDMI Inputs”. It even has the same red tinge on its edges. But (and this is a gigantic “But”), the Samsung LN46B650 has so much more to offer you than those things mentioned above. Oh yes, I can confidently say that the Samsung LN46B650 is so much more than its predecessor because it has wonderful new additional features! Now let us see what they are, shall we?

First, the Samsung LN46B650 has 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, which means the range with which you can control the contrast is twofold, compared to the Samsung LN46A650 with its only 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. In short, you would be able to get sharper and clearer images with the B650 model than with the A650.

Next up, and of particular interest to cyber junkies, is the fact that it can be connected directly to your broadband connection. In fact, it’s set up in such way that you can access online content from the top three sites out there, namely, YouTube, Yahoo and Flickr. Essentially, what this means is, you get to surf the World Wide Web on a huge 46″ monitor. Just think about it, when you’re watching sexy babes perform their shows, it’ll be just like having them in your home giving you a private show.

Amazingly enough, there are even more features than I’ve already mentioned. For example, the TV also has two USB ports, thus making it able to read digital video, music and photos. Best of all is, all you need is a USB Flash Drive and you’ll be up and riding. Don’t have a USB Flash Drive? No problem! Simply download files directly from the internet onto the TV’s built-in 2GB Flash Memory instead.

And last, but definitely not the least, is this; the Samsung LN46B650 has a mind-blowing sound system with a subwoofer. This means that all your audio will be produced by two loud speakers that create high quality audio with some awesome bass. How cool is that?! So, all in all, saying that the Samsung LN46B650 is a greater product than its predecessor may very well be the understatement of the decade! Check it out now and see if you don’t agree with me!

The phenomenon of electromagnetic induction was first discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831, and it is evident that he realised at least a part of its future potential in the modern world. A contemporary politician asked him about the usefulness of the discovery; he answered ‘at present I do not know, but one day you will be able to put a tax on it.’

The earliest record of using electromagnetic technology to locate buried cables dates from around 1910. More portable locators were made over the next years and the Sharman Main Finder was just one example. The user instructions give a tinge of envy to anyone trying to trace gas pipes .. ..’just clip the generator to a gas bracket in the nearest house or onto a street lamp.’

American and German schools of design emerged during the years leading up to the Second World War. In North America roads were wide and wide cables hung on poles so the main requirement for a locator was to locate widely spaced buried pipes. The result was a simple, high frequency, low power and low cost locator.

In Germany, cables as well as pipes were buried under narrow streets, so elaborate low frequency and high power locators were developed that required considerable expertise to obtain satisfactory results.

Dr Gerhard Fisher of California designed the Metallascope, the first high performance buried pipe and cable locating set. His system made use of the latest scientific developments and his company exists today and still produces the M-scope, an up-to-date descendent of the original Metallascope.

One of the engineering sections of Bell Laboratories studied the problem of accurate location of newly buried cables and recognised that an antenna with twin sensing aerials would give more positive plan definition, and also measure the depth of a target cable. The subsequent design, called the Depthometer, was engineered and manufactured in 1964. It was another 12 years before the first commercial twin aerial antenna locator was made by the Electrolocation company in Bristol England.

The twin aerial system was found to have substantial advantages over single aerial locators. Twin sensing aerials combined the seemingly contradictory qualities of discrimination with sensitivity. For the first time it was possible to locate buried cables below an overhead power line and to sort out crowded utility services under a city street intersection.

The introduction of the twin aerial antenna coupled with miniaturised electronic circuitry coincided with a programme of extending and upgrading utility distribution systems. This growing demand and technical progress resulted in a series of advances and new features to make locating more certain and more simple. Some of these advances included:

” Combination of active and passive signal reception
” Multi-frequency locating sets enabling the user to select the most suitable frequency for each application
” Electronic depth measurement.
” Current measurement along the length of a pipe or cable to detect coating or insulation defects.
” Current direction recognition to verify the identity of a target line.
” Permanently installed signal transmitters to apply a signal tone to a telephone cable over distances up to 150km/100 miles.

Today, electromagnetic locators are the worldwide standard for locating buried pipes and cables. A number of specialised manufacturers offer a choice of locators ranging from simple equipment used to detect the presence of buried cables to sophisticated instruments for pinpointing, identifying and fault finding buried pipes and cables in the most complex situations.
