In the UK today, industry couldn’t function properly without the help of support workers solving problems with networks and computers, while giving advice to users on a day to day basis. As we’re all becoming more and more dependent on technology, we also become increasingly dependent on the well trained networking professionals, who keep the systems going.

Of course: the actual training or a certification is not what you’re looking for; the job or career that you want is. Many trainers unfortunately completely prioritise just the training course. It’s a testament to the marketing skills of the big companies, but a large percentage of students start out on programs that sound wonderful from the syllabus guide, but which provides the end-result of a job that doesn’t satisfy. Talk to many college students to see what we mean.

You’ll want to understand the expectations of your industry. Which particular accreditations they will want you to have and in what way you can gain some industry experience. Spend some time setting guidelines as to how far you wish to build your skill-set as it may control your selection of accreditations. Always seek guidance and advice from an industry professional, even if you have to pay – it’s much safer and cheaper to find out at the beginning whether something is going to suit and interest you, rather than realise after several years of study that you’ve picked the wrong track and have to return to the start of another program.

Commercially accredited qualifications are now, undoubtedly, already replacing the traditional routes into IT – but why is this? Key company training (in industry terminology) is far more effective and specialised. Industry has acknowledged that specialisation is essential to cope with a technically advancing world. Adobe, Microsoft, CISCO and CompTIA are the dominant players. Academic courses, for instance, clog up the training with vast amounts of background study – with much too broad a syllabus. Students are then prevented from getting enough core and in-depth understanding on a specific area.

If an employer is aware what areas they need covered, then they simply need to advertise for someone with a specific qualification. The syllabuses are set to exacting standards and do not vary between trainers (in the way that degree courses can).

Think about the facts below in detail if you think that over-used sales technique about examination guarantees seems like a good idea:

They’ve allowed costings for it one way or another. It’s definitely not free – it’s simply been shoe-horned into the price as a whole. Qualifying on the first ‘go’ is what everyone wants to do. Taking your exams progressively one by one and funding them as you go has a marked effect on pass-rates – you prepare appropriately and think carefully about the costs.

Shouldn’t you be looking to hold on to your money and pay for the exam when you take the exam, rather than coughing up months or even a year or two in advance to the college, and also to sit exams more locally – rather than in some remote centre? A lot of extra profit is netted by a number of companies who incorporate exam fees into the cost of the course. For quite legitimate reasons, a number of students don’t get to do their exams but no refunds are given. Believe it or not, providers exist that actually bank on it – as that’s how they make a lot of their profit. Remember, with ‘Exam Guarantees’ from most places – the company decides when you are allowed to do a re-take. You’ll have to prove conclusively that you can pass before they’ll pay for another exam.

Shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds on ‘Exam Guarantees’ is naive – when hard work, commitment and the right preparation via exam simulations is what will get you through.

An area that’s often missed by new students thinking about a course is ‘training segmentation’. This is essentially the method used to break up the program for timed release to you, which makes a huge difference to where you end up. The majority of training companies will set up a 2 or 3 year study programme, and send out each piece as you pass each exam. If you think this sound logical, then consider this: What if there are reasons why you can’t finish all the sections or exams? And what if you find the order of the modules counter-intuitive? Through no fault of your own, you mightn’t complete everything fast enough and consequently not get all your materials.

To avoid any potential future issues, it’s normal for most trainees to make sure that every element of their training is posted to them in one go, with nothing held back. It’s then up to you at what speed and in which order you want to finish things.

Commencing from the viewpoint that it’s necessary to choose the job we want to do first and foremost, before we can even contemplate which method of training ticks the right boxes, how do we decide on the correct route? Because having no previous experience in IT, in what way could we be expected to understand what someone in a particular job does? To work through this, a discussion is necessary, covering a variety of different aspects:

* Your hobbies and interests – as they can point towards what areas will provide a happy working life.

* Why it seems right starting in Information Technology – maybe you’d like to achieve a life-long goal like firing your boss and working for yourself for example.

* Your earning requirements that are important to you?

* Considering the huge variation that computing encapsulates, you’ll need to be able to understand how they differ.

* Our advice is to think deeply about any sacrifices you’ll need to make, as well as what commitment and time you’re going to invest in your education.

At the end of the day, the only real way of understanding everything necessary is by means of a long chat with a professional that has enough background to provide solid advice.

Currently in the UK, many workplaces would be severely hampered without assistance from support workers solving problems with PC’s and networks, while giving advice to users on a constant basis. As we’re all becoming more and more reliant on advanced technology, we additionally become increasingly dependent on the skilled and qualified networking professionals, who maintain those systems.

Finding job security in this economic down-turn is problematic. Companies can throw us out of the workforce at the drop of a hat – as and when it suits them. We can however reveal security at market-level, by searching for areas in high demand, together with a shortage of skilled staff.

Looking at the IT market, the recent e-Skills study demonstrated an over 26 percent shortage in trained professionals. Accordingly, for each 4 job positions in existence around the computer industry, companies are only able to locate properly accredited workers for three of them. This one concept alone shows why the UK needs a lot more new trainees to join the Information Technology market. As the Information Technology market is increasing at such a speed, could there honestly be a better sector worth taking into account for your new career.

As the computer market grants so many dazzling advancement opportunities for us – what are the questions we should be asking and what factors are important to consider?

A expert and specialised consultant (in direct contrast to a salesman) will ask questions and seek to comprehend your current level of ability and experience. There is no other way of working out your starting level of study. Remember, if you’ve got any previous certification, then you can sometimes expect to pick-up at a different starting-point to someone new to the industry. If this is your initial stab at studying to take an IT exam then it may be wise to start with some basic PC skills training first.

At the top of your shopping list for a training program should be proper direct-access 24×7 support with expert mentors and instructors. So many companies we come across only provide office hours (or extended office hours) support. Find a good quality service where you can access help at any time you choose (even if it’s early hours on Sunday morning!) You’ll need direct-access to qualified mentors and tutors, and not a message system as this will slow you down – consistently being held in a queue for a call-back at a convenient time for them.

The very best training providers utilise several support facilities active in different time-zones. An online system provides an interactive interface to provide a seamless experience, no matter what time you login, help is at hand, without any problems or delays. You can’t afford to accept anything less. Support round-the-clock is the only viable option for technical training. It’s possible you don’t intend to study late evenings; usually though, we’re out at work during the provided support period.

Often, trainers provide a shelf full of reference manuals. Obviously, this isn’t much fun and not a very good way of taking things in. Many years of research has always confirmed that an ‘involved’ approach to study, where we utilise all our senses, will more likely produce memories that are deeper and longer-lasting.

Fully interactive motion videos with demonstrations and practice sessions beat books hands-down. And they’re far more fun. All companies must be pushed to demo some simple examples of their courseware. You should hope for instructor-led videos and a variety of interactive modules.

Go for CD and DVD ROM based physical training media whenever you can. You can then avoid all the difficulties of internet connection failure and issues with signal quality.

Qualifications from the commercial sector are now, very visibly, starting to replace the traditional routes into the industry – so why should this be? Industry is of the opinion that to learn the appropriate commercial skills, proper accreditation from companies such as Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA most often has much more specialised relevance – for considerably less. Higher education courses, for example, clog up the training with a lot of loosely associated study – and much too wide a syllabus. Students are then held back from learning the core essentials in sufficient depth.

Just as the old advertisement said: ‘It does what it says on the tin’. All an employer has to do is know what they’re looking for, and then advertise for someone with the specific certification. Then they know that anyone who applies can do the necessary work.

Including examinations up-front and presenting it as a guarantee for your exams is popular with many companies. Consider the facts:

Certainly it isn’t free – you’re still coughing up for it – it’s just been wrapped up in the price of the package. People who enter their exams one by one, paying for them just before taking them are in a much stronger position to qualify at the first attempt. They’re mindful of what they’ve paid and so are more inclined to make sure they’re ready.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay a training college in advance for examination fees? Hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, rather than coughing up months or even a year or two in advance – and take it closer to home – not at somewhere of their bidding. Including money in your training package for exams (plus interest – if you’re financing your study) is insane. Resist being talked into filling the training company’s account with your hard-earned cash just to give them more interest! There are those who hope that you will never make it to exams – then they’ll keep the extra money. The majority of organisations will require you to do mock exams and with-hold subsequent exam entries from you until you have proved to them you have a good chance of passing – which makes an ‘Exam Guarantee’ frankly useless.

With average Prometric and VUE examinations coming in at approximately 112 pounds in Great Britain, the most cost-effective way to cover the cost is by paying when you need them. Not to fork out thousands extra in up-front costs. Study, commitment and preparing with good quality mock and practice exams is what will really guarantee success.

Be watchful that any accreditations you’re considering doing will be recognised by employers and are bang up to date. The ‘in-house’ certifications provided by many companies are generally useless. From an employer’s perspective, only the major heavyweights like Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA (as an example) provide enough commercial weight. Nothing else hits the mark.

Something that a lot of people don’t believe, but it’s true, is that video games actually bring benefits to people that play them, more specifically to their minds. There is more to these games than pretty graphics, good music and plots that emerge the player in the game’s world.

1. Strategic thinking is improved by playing video games. When you play a game, you need to take decisions in advance and plan the next few steps that you’re going to take. Playing games constantly allows people to develop their strategic thinking skills and these skills can be applied to real world situations.

2. By playing video games, your problem solving skills are improved. While you can say that about every game out there, video games are proven through studies to be improving the skills of solving problems. Almost every game out there has as a main focus a problem that needs solving in a challenging manner, provoking the player into thinking how to do it. By playing a single game, a player can have anywhere between a couple and a couple of hundred problems that need solving.

3. Eye and hand coordination are improved by video games. To test this, take a game controller and move the character inside the game. Maneuvering a mouse and a game controller ask for the same skills from the player.

4. Taking decisions quickly is something that is facilitated by video games. The impromptu situations is one of the factors that leads to this quality. Wherever you are in a game, you never know what will happen next, which makes it exciting for the player. If players want to win the game, they need to take the best decisions possible on the spot, without much time to think about it.

5. The imagination is stimulated when you play video games. People that argue that video games are bad for people are wrong and are usually limited in their imagination or never tried actually playing a game. One argument of these people is that games provide the things to the mind instead of leaving the mind to imagine things. The same people believe that a Lego set is all a kid needs to grow. We totally disagree with that. What a video game does for the player’s imagination is truly great and it encourages him to dream more.

6. Exploration is encouraged in games. In RPG’s for example, you need to go and explore the world ahead of you, seeing the unknown and learning about it. Opening a door and not knowing what you will find or the consequences of your actions encourages people to get used to exploring and learning.

7. Exercising the memory is also encouraged by video games. Players need to memorize the terrain, always knowing which way they should head next and what places offer the best rewards or the most challenging enemies.

8. Video games allow people to learn that actions have consequences. Every action taken by a player has a consequence and the player needs to live with it.

9. Endurance, dedication and patience are just a few of the things taught by video games. You can’t finish a good game in a single day. The games that are most appreciated will usually take weeks to finish.

Video games offer a lot of possibilities to the mind of those that play them and listed here are just a few of them.

Nature is generous. She has given us snow-covered mountain slopes from which come life-giving water. She has given us rich soil. She has given us grow¬ing plants for food, shelter, and clothing. And beneath the earth she has stored up priceless minerals.

And yet there are those who seek to destroy it, whether it is for some ill-begotten purpose, or just to show that they have power. Fortunately there are ways to fight this evil; either by starting a petition or perhaps delving into the field of environmental sciences.

Environmental science may open a path for you to your life’s work— work in some field of environmental science, perhaps as an engineer, a doctor, a researcher. Or perhaps your interests will take you into some work not related directly to this science. Even so, your study of environmental science will be of great value to you. It will help you to understand the world in which you live. More importantly, it will teach you a method of solving problems.

Once upon a time, there was no science. Gradually, thoughtful men began to study the things and the happenings around them. They began to study their environment. As knowledge increased, some men began to realize that all things in the heavens above, on the earth and beneath, and in the waters under the earth were made according to Divine Plan.

Men began to organize this knowledge, and began to classify things, putting similar things in groups. This arranging and classifying was the beginning of science; it can be said that science is organized knowledge.

But they did not stop with just organizing their knowledge. Gradually they worked out a plan for studying their surroundings. Science is a plan or a method for studying a problem, and the plan that scientists use is called the scientific method. The plan might be stated this way:

1. Know your problem—that is, think through whatever it is you want to find out.
2. Consider all the information you have about the problem.
3. Using all the information you have, make the best guess you can.
4. Test your best guess by observation or experiment.
5. Record your observations and the results of your experiments accurately.
6. From these observations and experiments, state your own conclusion or answer to your problem.
7. Try to apply your conclusion to other things that happen about you. See if it helps you to understand them better.

Experiments help find the answers to certain problems. Before we try an experiment, we should understand the parts or steps involved. A true scientist always gets his thoughts clear about any problem he attacks. A simple, brief statement of the problem helps him to do this. The petition process works much the same way.

Next he decides what materials to use, and what to do with them. He observes carefully what happens and writes brief notes telling what he sees. Finally, he thinks over all the facts he has learned and then states what in his opinion is the answer. But his answer, which we shall call his conclusion, may or may not be true. So he uses his new discovery, his conclusion, to try to explain similar problems.

Often the scientist will try the experiment over and over again to see if the answer is always the same. A true scientist seeks true answers. You, too, must try to get true answers. Never insist that an answer is true until you have enough evidence to prove it.

When starting a new interactive training course, it’s tempting to become a complete social outcast and immerse ourselves in our studies at every available opportunity. It’s an exciting time, with lots of new, interesting subjects to get our teeth into. But apart from that being a rather strange thing to do, it’s also not the best way to learn and retain information.

The first thing we need to establish is a sustainable study habit. This is a number of hours each week that we can commit to and stick to, and doesn’t exclude every other area of our lives! It’s better not to run before we can walk, and much easier to take in information in bite-sized pieces.

However savvy we are with our learning diary, there are inevitably going to be times when the brain just glazes over, and nothing will go in. Consistently learning a smaller amount well is more useful and maintainable than learning a larger amount not so well.

There can be all sorts of reasons why we’ve had a mental block, so when this happens, it’s important not to get demoralised. There are lots of ways to overcome the stalemate. It’s amazing how a nice cup of tea and a piece of cake can fire up the reserves again. Taking a break, going outside into the garden and breathing deeply can all help.

Anything new can test our mental agility, and it’s not unusual to grapple with understanding the first time we look at something. Sometimes we just have to accept that this is part of learning – it happens from time to time and it’s uncomfortable, but with application we can push through until penny drops! To accomplish anything worthwhile takes a few failed attempts along the way – remember that awkward feeling on your early driving lessons?

Our sub-conscious mind has a habit of solving problems when we’re not consciously aware it was working on them, so it can help to leave something over-night and come back the next day with a fresh pair of eyes. Suddenly the answer pops into our head when we’re least expecting it.

If we cover a section again, and then have a go at explaining it to someone else this can help to clarify the point. Writing it down can also help to organise thoughts – if we state our assumptions and the evidence for them, we can often analyse out the problem areas.

With so many different online facilities out there we can frequently stumble upon something that puts it all into context. Researching on Google or technical forums for other explanations and descriptions can sometimes hit the spot.

Finally, sophisticated learning systems offer excellent mentor support. There’s nothing like an on-screen demonstration and one-to-one explanation to help the penny drop.

Too many colleges just do courses. Always use a provider that specialises in IT training geared to the needs of industry. Each type of role asks for different levels of qualifications and skills, so we strongly recommend that you take advice from an industry expert before settling on a course or career path. That way you can be confident that the syllabus of your learning package fits the skill set of the job you want.

The CompTIA A+ training consists of four exams; A+ competency is given when you’ve passed the Essentials exam and one other from the remaining three areas. This is why most colleges offer only two of the training courses.

In reality you will need the training for all four areas as many jobs will require the skills and knowledge of all four areas. It’s not essential to take all four exams, but we would recommend you study all four courses. Then you can choose which one you take alongside the CompTIA Essentials exam.

CompTIA A+ Training. What Jobs Will It Lead To?

CompTIA A+ on its own will mean fixing, building and repairing stand-alone PC’s and MAC’s which are not part of a large network – usually personal computers in the home market.

If you add into the mix user-skills such as ECDL, MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) or MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician), it will open the door to help-desk work. This could involve solving problems and giving instructions verbally over the phone for a client to follow, or more increasingly using remote access tools to take over someone’s computer via the internet or network.

If you would like to be the person who wanders around a company fixing and supporting, you’ll need to add CompTIA Network+, or consider the Microsoft networking route (MCSA – MCSE) as you’ll need a deeper understanding of how networks work.

If this sort of work is your thing, learning to you probably means getting stuck in and having a go! If all else fails read the instructions, – a practical hands-on approach to life. Any manuals you own probably gather dust and it’s a long time since you read anything from cover to cover.

If this has struck a chord, you’ll find a traditional training route of books, manuals and classrooms very uncomfortable. You could force yourself to do it but why bother when there are fully interactive on-screen training courses.

With modern technology you can now watch full motion video tutorials followed by on screen practical examples of what to do, and then practice your new found skills by interacting with the software in virtual labs. You’ll want to get back to it again soon, and it’s all sitting on your computer anytime you’re ready, with no need to trudge along to classes every week.

To complete this quality form of training, all you need is some friendly help and you’re on your way. We would recommend direct access 24/7 support where a tutor is waiting to communicate with you anytime of day or night. This sophisticated level of course and support has been put together and it’s out there if you look. When you find it, you’ll be surprised how much cheaper it is than traditional CompTIA A+ training.

Scott Edwards has been involved with the IT industry for 30 yrs. He reckons he ought to know what he’s talking about by now. To further investigate CompTIA A+ Training, visit LearningLolly Computer Training.
