The definitions of “web” and “design” have both been somewhat elastic in the last decade or two as both technology and user expectations have evolved. Some of the evolution is the slow, gradual kind you don’t notice until you turn around a week, month or year later and go, “Wow, when did that happen?” Other times, you can almost watch it in real time, as in 2002 and 2003 when the web began a quick stretch from personal computers to TVs, cell phones, media players and even refrigerators (an “ice” idea that got a cool reception).
For non-technical culture-watchers, it was another evolving “gee-whiz kind of thing,” but for web professionals it was a phase of growth called “the ubiquitous web.” It leveraged some basic XML capabilities to spread the virtual goodies around a bit more widely, but really was merely evolutionary, not revolutionary, as the marketing departments would describe it. One thing any careful observer would (and did) note was that it put new demands on the web designer. A nice layout with a few hyperlinks was not going to do it any longer.
More and more demands
Fast-forward a few years, into 2005 or 2006, and we enter the era of “service oriented architecture” and other, similar buzzwords. The boundaries were extended, followed by a ramping up of expectations and then the arrival of “loosely coupled services” and another set of evolutionary ideas. Over the last three or four years this model has been refined and revised, but we are still in the era of “customer-centric web design.”
The term pretty much defines itself, or it should, at any rate. Without trying to pin down the years too precisely, or make the model seem hard and fast, the evolution of web design can also be plotted along a path that has led inexorably from a focus on the companies and their sites to the customers who are visiting them. The progression went something like this:
Company-centric sites: The first web design model has been called “brochureware,” since the first websites in the early- and mid-1990s were essentially marketing materials on your screen. The design effort was sometimes reduced to scanning sell sheets and sticking them on a page with some links.
Designer-centric (or ego-centric) sites: Once the tools became available to use the web as a canvas, the artists went hog-wild and “gussied up” cyberspace to an incredible degree. Like the early desktop publishing era, there were a few years of wretched excess before the overdoses tapered off. There is still some of this going on (actually, there are still brochureware sites, too) but it’s fast dying off.
Technology-centric sites: When a new generation of tools took the designer past the canvas metaphor to the “whiz-bang arcade” model with Flash, other animation tools, embedded video and non-stop music, we saw the rise of the EBOC style (“Everything and a Bag O’ Chips”). Technological rah-rah for its own sake did get old pretty quickly, which is the best thing one can probably say about it. At least it led to the last bullet point:
Customer-centric sites: This is where we are at present, more or less. This is a good place for design evolution to be, because as long as the customer is at the center of the design and the website rationale, service is a key focus and customer satisfaction will be high. It is incredible to think that this idea had to evolve all over again on the net after “regular business” arrived at the model years ago. Then again, the web was going to “redefine” the need for sales and earnings, too, remember? Right.
Where we are (for a minute, anyway)
Over the last 15 years or so web design has gone through a number of phases, driven by various forces in its ever-changing environment. Web browsers added a slew of features and improved functionality by a huge amount. The HTML specification matured from a rigid, structure-bound markup language to a highly extensible hybrid, while CSS has come to be widely used as a way to keep structure sequestered from content and happily ignorant of its presentation.
Not only that, but the design process itself has evolved from a mostly-art process to a fairly technical one, forcing art-oriented designers to brush up on their technology and/or partner with the company “geeks” for coding, SEO, database integration and other “tech stuff.” At the same time, the marketing and sales professionals have brought their own insights (and demands) to the design phase, making the artist more of a ringmaster or coordinator than a freewheeling illustrator.
The future: What does evolution mean?
Today’s corporate websites are there to serve the company’s customers and other users, so the design must be both personalized and flexible. The changing expectations have combined with new capabilities to lead corporate sites on the evolutionary path from text-based to multimedia, static to dynamic, brochureware to interactivity, fixed to extensible and broadcasting to two-way conversation. It takes a team to develop and deploy a successful website, from writers and code-heads to marketing pros and, yes, graphic designers.
We don’t know quite what business websites will look like in, say, 2013, but we do know that evolution doesn’t stand still. The definitions of “web” and “design” have both been somewhat elastic in the last decade or two as both technology and user expectations have evolved. Some of the evolution is the slow, gradual kind you don’t notice until you turn around a week, month or year later and go, “Wow, when did that happen?” Other times, you can almost watch it in real time, as in 2002 and 2003 when the web began a quick stretch from personal computers to TVs, cell phones, media players and even refrigerators (an “ice” idea that got a cool reception).
For non-technical culture-watchers, it was another evolving “gee-whiz kind of thing,” but for web professionals it was a phase of growth called “the ubiquitous web.” It leveraged some basic XML capabilities to spread the virtual goodies around a bit more widely, but really was merely evolutionary, not revolutionary, as the marketing departments would describe it. One thing any careful observer would (and did) note was that it put new demands on the web designer. A nice layout with a few hyperlinks was not going to do it any longer.
More and more demands
Fast-forward a few years, into 2005 or 2006, and we enter the era of “service oriented architecture” and other, similar buzzwords. The boundaries were extended, followed by a ramping up of expectations and then the arrival of “loosely coupled services” and another set of evolutionary ideas. Over the last three or four years this model has been refined and revised, but we are still in the era of “customer-centric web design.”
The term pretty much defines itself, or it should, at any rate. Without trying to pin down the years too precisely, or make the model seem hard and fast, the evolution of web design can also be plotted along a path that has led inexorably from a focus on the companies and their sites to the customers who are visiting them. The progression went something like this:Company-centric sites: The first web design model has been called “brochureware,” since the first websites in the early- and mid-1990s were essentially marketing materials on your screen. The design effort was sometimes reduced to scanning sell sheets and sticking them on a page with some links.
Designer-centric (or ego-centric) sites: Once the tools became available to use the web as a canvas, the artists went hog-wild and “gussied up” cyberspace to an incredible degree. Like the early desktop publishing era, there were a few years of wretched excess before the overdoses tapered off. There is still some of this going on (actually, there are still brochureware sites, too) but it’s fast dying off.
Technology-centric sites: When a new generation of tools took the designer past the canvas metaphor to the “whiz-bang arcade” model with Flash, other animation tools, embedded video and non-stop music, we saw the rise of the EBOC style (“Everything and a Bag O’ Chips”). Technological rah-rah for its own sake did get old pretty quickly, which is the best thing one can probably say about it. At least it led to the last bullet point:
Customer-centric sites: This is where we are at present, more or less. This is a good place for design evolution to be, because as long as the customer is at the center of the design and the website rationale, service is a key focus and customer satisfaction will be high. It is incredible to think that this idea had to evolve all over again on the net after “regular business” arrived at the model years ago. Then again, the web was going to “redefine” the need for sales and earnings, too, remember? Right.
Where we are (for a minute, anyway)
Over the last 15 years or so web design has gone through a number of phases, driven by various forces in its ever-changing environment. Web browsers added a slew of features and improved functionality by a huge amount. The HTML specification matured from a rigid, structure-bound markup language to a highly extensible hybrid, while CSS has come to be widely used as a way to keep structure sequestered from content and happily ignorant of its presentation.
Not only that, but the design process itself has evolved from a mostly-art process to a fairly technical one, forcing art-oriented designers to brush up on their technology and/or partner with the company “geeks” for coding, SEO, database integration and other “tech stuff.” At the same time, the marketing and sales professionals have brought their own insights (and demands) to the design phase, making the artist more of a ringmaster or coordinator than a freewheeling illustrator.
The future: What does evolution mean?
Today’s corporate websites are there to serve the company’s customers and other users, so the design must be both personalized and flexible. The changing expectations have combined with new capabilities to lead corporate sites on the evolutionary path from text-based to multimedia, static to dynamic, brochureware to interactivity, fixed to extensible and broadcasting to two-way conversation. It takes a team to develop and deploy a successful website, from writers and code-heads to marketing pros and, yes, graphic designers.
We don’t know quite what business websites will look like in, say, 2013, but we do know that evolution doesn’t stand still. Web design will continue to expand its definition, evolve in its complex environment and change in ways both predictable and unforeseen—just like it’s been doing since Day One.

Does anyone remember how, less than a year ago, several commentators suggested Google was compiling a series of products that could emulate an online operating system? At the time, Google steadfastly denied such rumors. Yesterday, Google purchased Upstartle the maker of a browser-based word processor called Writely.
Writely is an online word processor that enables multiple users to access and work on documents from any location. It can be used as a collaborative editing device and offers users online publishing options including the ability to convert Writely documents into “normal-looking web pages” or blog postings.
The acquisition of Upstartle, combined with other current and pending Google services poses a serious challenge to Microsoft’s desktop oriented products. Google is clearly building a suite of branded, browser-based applications that contains several daily use products designed to capture users from Microsoft Office.
Earlier today, Slashdot published a story suggesting Google is running a closed beta test of Google Calendar, including a link to a series of screen shots The project, nicknamed CL2, will be integrated with Gmail in the future.
The stakes for both firms are high with Microsoft preparing to release its new Internet focused operating system, Vista before the end of 2006. Until recently, Microsoft was able to bank on the storage space offered by personal computers. Its operating systems run from the hard drive and most digital documents composed by computer users are stored on those users’ hard drives. The security of the hard-drive dependent storage system Microsoft enjoyed is about to change radically.
At its Analysts Day, held earlier this month, Google inadvertently announced the development of Gdrive, a virtually infinite, online data storage service. A series of slides offering preliminary details of Gdrive were included in notes for one of the day’s PowerPoint presentations but were later removed by Google.
“The notes were deleted from the slides we posted because they were not intended for publication,” Google spokeswoman Lynn Fox said in an interview with vnunet.com While she declined further comment, those notes also included financial projections that stretched into next year, forcing Google to file a statement with the SEC on March 7
Shortly after the presentation, the CEO of Findory.com, Greg Linden, posted comments about them to his Geeking with Greg blog, before Google removed them. The full text of the notes from Google Analyst Day can be found here
In his review of the deleted notes, Greg found a few interesting sentences. At one point in Slide 19, the text notes how Google is inspired by the idea of “… a world with infinite storage, bandwidth and CPU power.”
Google, like its competitors, is becoming a second generation web hosting firm. Another line from Slide 19 says Google wants to be able to “… house all user files including Emails, web history, pictures, bookmarks, etc and make it accessible from anywhere (any device, any platform, etc).”
Google’s capacity to store and retrieve personal information is already being applied to the corporate world. Google’s Desktop 3 includes an option that allows users who work on multiple computers, or multi-user work-groups, to search for items stored on the hard drives of multiple computers. Google keeps copies of files found on computers in the file-sharing network and transfers them from unit to unit as searches take place.
One of the more interesting lines Greg extracted from Slide 19 was the idea that files stored and shared through Gdrive would become the “Golden copy” of those documents. Gdrive, like Writely is designed to facilitate work-group collaboration, much like a central file server in most IT offices does now. The copy kept on the hard-drives of members of a working group will be a cache of the most recent version displayed on that particular computer, but not necessarily the most up-to-date document.
Google Labs is pushing the other major Internet and search firms to work harder and faster. The addition of Writely to Google’s stable of membership-based products raises another series of hurdles for Microsoft and might force them to refocus their Vista strategies. Microsoft was hoping to challenge Google’s search dominance by integrating search within the desktop and operating system. Google appears ready to flank them by moving applications formerly found on the desktop into its sphere of search-related products. 2006 is shaping up to be a most interesting year.

As the world’s largest chipmaker and holder of more than 75% market share, Intel helps set the pace for the computing industry. Intel’s microprocessors are used in more than three-quarters of the world’s personal computers, so its results are a barometer for the global PC sector. That is why, analysts keep a close eye on the company’s take on the overall market and boom in the sales of Intel’s chips tend to translate into higher computer sales for HP, Dell and others down the road.
Intel Corp’s good second quarter results and impressive outlook for the second half of the year had rallying markets climbing even higher and provided substantial proof and also relief that the anticipated recovery in semiconductor stocks is firmly intact.
According to various analysts, the darkest time in the personal computer industry’s history may have ended. In the last few quarters, hardware makers like Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Dell have suffered as one-fifth to one-quarter of their computer sales have vanished.
Ironically, in a sharp contrast, Microsoft, the software giant has also experienced a drop in sales of its Windows software and carried out large-scale layoffs. Intel’s Results
Earlier this week, Intel reported sales of $8 billion for its second quarter, which ended June 30. It is lower than the $9.5 billion, it posted in the same period last year. Also, for the first time since the recession hit, the chipzilla felt comfortable enough to provide a forecast for its present quarter, saying it expected revenue of $8.1 billion to $8.9 billion.
Those figures exclude charges tied to a $1.45 billion fine levied against Intel by the European Commission for anti-competitive practices in the PC market. With the fine included, Intel posted a loss of $398 million, or 7 cents a share.
Still, Intel reported higher-than-expected gross margins and a quarter-to-quarter rise in sales of chips, lifted by healthier sales of laptop chips.
In April, Paul S Otellini, Intel’s chief executive declared that he thought the PC slump had reached bottom and the company’s recent financial results appear to confirm this.
After, the latest encouragement from Intel, traders found more good news when the Fed released minutes from its June meeting, saying it now expects the economy to contract at a slower pace than previously thought.
Intel’s Roadmap
The company is focusing to bring 32 nm into the mainstream. According to the leaked roadmap, Intel will soon bring its three quad-core Clarksfield processors, the i7-720QM, i7-820QM and i7-920XM, clocked at 1.6GHz, 1.73GHz and 2GHz respectively with prices starting at $340 for the 1.6GHz model.
Also, Intel has plans to swap Core 2 Duo CPUs with two ultra-low-power Core i7 chips. These chips will be followed by the launch of Arrandale dual-core chips in early 2010.
Also, Mr. Otellini said that the ultra-thin portable computer system had been designed to address the shortcomings of netbooks. “When people try to do 3D games on Netbooks or try to run their office applications on them, they tend to think it’s a bit slow and that is not just the processor, it’s the entire architecture. Therefore, it seems that Intel is pegging ultra thins as future against netbooks. With new chips in the pipeline they are targeting to address shortcomings of netbooks for gamers and business users.

What did people do with their time 20 years ago? How did we ever manage without personal computers, the Internet, cell phones, iPods and 24 hour cable news? The technological landscape is vastly different these days and scientist are wondering just what that means for our brains.
According to research done last year by UCLA scientist Dr. Gary Small, daily doses of technology may be altering the way the brain functions, particularly in social skills. He suggests that all that screen time may weaken the brain circuits involved in face-to-face interactions. He is concerned that fundamental social skills like reading facial expressions during a conversation are being compromised.
Small is particularly concerned about what he calls the digital native, those in their twenties and younger who have been “digitally hard-wired since toddlerhood.” As he explained in an Associated Press article, the digital native runs the risk of being socially awkward and isolated by their inability to interpret non-verbal messages from people. He is afraid this may be particularly true in the classroom that still relies on traditional verbal instruction along with interaction with the teacher and other students.
Small argues his case in his book “iBrain: Surviving the Technological Altercation of the Modern Mind.” He admits that his research about whether or not all this technology is changing brain circuitry is new and ongoing.
Other studies, in fact, have taken the opposite tact by seeing positive outcomes for technology users. A MacArthur Foundation study found that teens feel very connected to each other through online social networking. The study allayed some parents’ fears that teenagers are vulnerable to online predators the more time they spend socially on the Internet. “The study found that most teenagers steer clear of dangerous sites and use the Web only for research or to communicate with established friends,” according to an article in the Austin-American Statesman.
Parents who are too protective and prohibit computer use for their teens may be keeping their kids out of the broader social loop. The study found that teenagers move between the online social world and the face-to-face interactions with relative ease, one building on the other.
Dr. Maryanne Wolf of Tufts University thinks technology may even affect how people learn to read. Technology requires users to gather information quickly, rather than the more methodical and sophisticated methods of comprehending regular reading material. She is studying if this rapid information gathering could be changing the normal brain pathways formed when reading. She is particularly curious about the affect on young children as technology becomes a more integral component of modern classrooms.
As with any new information technology, like 50 years ago with the inclusion of television to the average American home, there will be curiosity and controversy. It is certainly hard to imagine how our brains waited for the morning paper or the evening news to hear what was going on in the world around us. It seems like each generation has a quicker learning curve when it comes to the latest technology.
