Locksmiths save people from the worst of scenarios, but sometimes they are harbingers of doom. Campbell says he doesn’t receive any paperwork regarding the legality of this. The marshal is always present with the landlord when he goes to the site and he is the one with the paperwork (that is generally notarized) which states that permission has been granted to gain access to the apartment.

A landlord does not have the right to easily gain access to someone’s apartment. A landlord cannot just call us up and get allowed in, even though he is the owner of the building. Sticky situations arise, says Campbell. Sometimes someone is on vacation and there is a flood. These things happen. He goes through every channel possible to make sure it is done properly, legally and ethically.

Campbell says that the worst ethical dilemma is when he goes to a home to perform a martial eviction. He opens the door and an old woman is inside, just sitting with her stuff. He says you can tell she is destitute and perhaps has nowhere to go. However, there is really nothing we can do at that point. The landlord has the full legal right to evict her and the marshal is there with all the paperwork. Campbell says that he obviously feels horribly in situations like that, but what can he do? He wishes the city would provide some other means to help this person out, but he can’t really just leave at that point. A locksmith can’t really bail out at that point, especially when it is a marshal you see often and a landlord who you often do jobs for. He is put in a terrible position and it can get emotional and dramatic, but Campbell has to do what is required by the law. Those situations are definitely some of the worst times to be a locksmith.

As I was sitting at my computer a few days ago, a flying ant landed on my monitor. I then saw another fly past me. Later that night, there were a few of them on my TV screen and flying around the lights. That was driving us nuts. Then the next day, we noticed a little crack where our wall meets the ceiling where they were trailing in and out of, then about fifteen of them were in a pile right there! We finally had found where they were coming from. It turns out that they were inside our wall, apparently eating what was left of it.

When we had bought it, we were informed that the house had some sub-subterranean termites in the past, and it had been cleared up prior to when we bought it. Our den was an additional room that was built later after the home was built. This is where they said the termites were. Sure enough, when we tore down the wall yesterday, the ants were living in the wall, and when you touched the 2×4’s, they just crumbled like you just would not believe.

Today we ventured off to our local hardware store to pick up a few hundred dollars worth of materials, and rented their truck. I filled out the paperwork while hubby was gathering the drywall. In the very next checkout line over to where I was, I was surprised to hear a man start screaming and swearing at the man behind him at the top of his lungs! I thought for sure they were going to get into a fight. The man yelling was apparently on some type of serious drug, or simply off his meds!

He was accusing the guy in back of him of looking at his numbers, and was screaming profanities about him doing so. The girl who was helping me asked if she should phone the authorities. It was at that moment, the guy who was being yelled at came over to my lane still never saying a word. The aggressor then walked out of the store talking to himself. We were all very lucky he didn’t just pull out a gun and start firing. If he had physically done any harm or had not backed off, I would’ve had to pull out my TASER. That would bring new meaning to the saying “shop till you drop”! This just goes to show us that no matter where we are, there are some very disturbed individuals out there. I’ve been seeing the effects of the economy all around me, and people have been at their wit’s end.

There was a respectable family man who was a deacon, a youth soccer coach, and volunteered constructing orphanages in Brazil that just robbed a bank at gun point!
