If you use dial-up, you may have noticed that you are not connecting to the Internet at 56 kbps or 56000 bps. Or perhaps you’ve noticed that your downloads are slower then 7 bytes per second. Who’s fault is it? The ISP? Although many people choose them as the first to blame, the ISP is minimally responsible for your connection speed.
In order to understand Internet connection speeds, here is a basic overview of how dial up works:
1. You click connect on your computer to initiate a dial-up connection.
2. Your dial-up modem places a call on your telephone lines to another modem on your ISP’s end.
3. The two modems then send and receive test packets of information and agree on the optimal connection speed that they can send without losing or jumbling the information (hence, the screeching sounds).
4. The connection and speed is established, allowing you to send and receive information, that is, webpages, email, etc.
The dial-up modem itself can receive information at 56 kilobits per second, but since it’s using the telephone lines, several limitations apply. The connection speed, then, is the highest speed possible to send and receive packets of data based on the type of modem you have, the amount of inhibiting line noise or static is on the line, and the distance between your modem and the telephone company’s central office. With these factors in play, few dial-up users are physically capable of a connection speed much higher than 48-50 kbps.
Furthermore, the FCC has limited the maximum download speed to no more than 53.3 kilobits per second. This was to prevent “cross-talk”, where the activity of the dial up connection would run over into other lines and be heard on nearby telephone conversations. In the most ideal situation, you would live next door to the telephone company, and have brand new lines and modem. Your connection speed would most likely be 51-53 kbps.
Since dial-up modems have to hear analog signals over your phone line to send and receive information, one of the biggest factors of slow connection speeds and disconnects is the telephone line. Some things can be done, like shortening the distance of the phone cord to the modem and rewiring phone cords in your house. Unfortunately, many rural dial-up customers are often left with little or no solutions. If you live too far from the phone company’s central office, you may not be physically capable of getting faster connections. Sometimes phone company cannot afford to replace large sections of phone cords, especially if they are still in usable for phone conversations.
If you notice that you are getting low connection speeds, consider the following:
•Are you using a splitter or a phone cord longer than 5 feet? Try rearranging your computer set up to give your modem the closest access to the phone jack. Most modem ports have a second jack for your telephone so a splitter is not needed.
•Do you often hear static or humming on your home phone? You may need to rewire the lines in your house or the phone company may need to repair wires going to your home.
•Have you recently had inclement weather? Sometimes storms and heavy rain can cause temporary slow connection issues.
•Are you connecting to a local access number? Get several numbers for your area from your ISP, then check with your phone company to make sure the are local. Try several local numbers and see if one connects better than the other.
•Is your modem out of date (and lacking the latest compression technology)? Perhaps you need to buy a new modem or download new drivers for your model from the manufacturer’s website.

In today’s article, I’m going to quickly inform you about the Cisco IOS global configuration mode command named “aaa authorization reverse-access”.
So on that note let’s begin, CCNA’s (like you) use the “aaa authorization reverse-access” command to tell (configure) a network access server (NAS) router to request authorization information from either a TACACS+ or RADIUS security server before allowing a user to establish a reverse Telnet session.
In other words, an internal network administrator may sometimes need to perform a reverse Telnet session, so in order to gain control of a modem that is connected to a network access server (NAS) router; so he or she can make a call. If the network access server (NAS) router is configured with the “aaa authorization reverse-access” command, the router will check with either a TACACS+ or RADIUS security server first, to see if it’s o.k. for the network administrator to establish a reverse Telnet session to gain control of the modem to make the call.
Note: If a network access server (NAS) router is not configured with the command, it will automatically authorize all reverse Telnet sessions by default.
Below is the command’s syntax:
aaa authorization reverse-access {group radius | group tacacs+}
As you can see, the command is fairly simple to use; and it only has two keywords “group radius” or “group tacacs+”.
group radius – This keyword is used to specify that the network access server router will request authorization from a RADIUS security server before allowing a user to establish a reverse Telnet session.
group tacacs+ — This keyword is used to specify that the network access server router will request authorization from a TACACS+ security server before allowing a user to establish a reverse Telnet session.
And, like with mostly all Cisco IOS commands; you can use the word “no” in front of the command to remove (disable) the configured command; like you see below:
Router(config)#no aaa authorization reverse-access {group radius | group tacacs+}

Once Windows Vista has been installed, with all your hardware detected and installed, you then install your additional software. Additional software means Office, Anti-Virus, Printer, Scanner, Music, Messenger and so on software. Installing Windows Vista, and all the common (additional) software, should take up approximately 4 GigaBytes of hard drive space. This means if you have a 40GB (40 GigaByte) hard drive you will be left with 36GB for your own use – You could install more additional software like Games, Store your own Folders and Files, Download files from the Internet, Store CD contents and so on.

Each time you go on the internet Windows Vista, Internet Explorer and Websites save certain information about you and your activities. For example Windows Vista might save your User Names and Passwords so you do not have to retype them every time you want to go on the internet. When you update software, like Anti-Virus and Windows Vista software, the updated files have to be saved onto the hard drive as well. So with forever growing information, installation files and updated files the computer will realistically need 10 GigaBytes of hard drive space – This is a normal scenario for most people. With the remaining space people either leave it empty or use it as storage for their Music files for example. However. As Windows Vista indexes each file it stores, so it can find a file quicker, more space will be needed for the index itself.
REDUNDANT FILES
Try to avoid saving redundant files. For example. When you save an installation file, such as a downloaded Game.exe file, and then install it it will take up additional space. This is because files that need to be installed have usually been compressed (shrunk). So 10 game files (not 10 games) for example might of been shrunk into 1 small installation (Game.exe) file. Let’s say the 10 game files were 1 MegaByte each (so 10 MegaBytes) and then shrunk into 1 small (3 MegaBytes) installation (Game.exe) file, so it is quicker to download and/or store somewhere. When you activate the small installation file it is expanded back to its original 10 game files, which are then saved inside a Games folder on the hard drive. What this means is you have 10 installed game files and 1 small installation file, so the small installation file is then a redundant file. By saving the small installation file onto CD for example and then activating it from the CD you will save yourself 3 MegaBytes of hard drive space. If you now imagine you had 30 small installation files that would be a saving of 90 MegaBytes, if they were on a CD instead of the hard drive.
SPEED AND SIZE
If your hard drive is 20 GigaBytes or less it will go round at 5400rpm. And if it is more than 20GB but less than 80GB it will go round at 7200rpm. An hard drive is like a record player – It spins round and a needle (laser) reads/writes the data (Fig 1.1 above). The faster the rpm the faster the hard drive. If you have an old 5400rpm hard drive it is definitely worth upgrading to a 7200rpm hard drive because the speed difference is noticeable – Data is read/written faster. Two other reasons for upgrading are that it only costs £35 for a 40GB hard drive and because 20GB (or less) hard drives are now obsolete. One thing to remember though is that when you buy a new hard drive it is blank – It does not have any software on it at all. Not even Windows Vista.
In terms of size, although 1 GigaByte is 1,024,000,000 Bytes, you have to look at the size of the average file these days to put hd size into perspective. Here are some figures based on a 40 GigaByte hd:
40 GigaBytes = 40,960,000,000 Bytes
40 GigaBytes = 28,000 Floppy Disks
40 GigaBytes = 50 CDs
40 GigaBytes = 40,000 MegaBytes (or 40,000 1MB Files)
Although in reality you will never use the whole 40GB, never say never. With music downloading, digital cameras, scanners and bigger files becoming standard the need for storage space will grow.

So you have gone out and bought the Xbox 360!? It was a fantastic decision and you will enjoy hours upon hours of playing time with your new device, but before you get started into the wide world of online gaming you are going to need to know how to connect the 360 to the Live network.
Before you do anything you are going to need to decide how you plan on connecting the bad boy. The 360 supports both wired and wireless connections. In order to use a wireless connection you will need the Xbox 360 Wireless adapter. Personally I find the wireless connection to be a bit too temperamental for my liking so I go with a wired connection via a router, but not everyone has the same wireless experience.
To set up the connection via a router unplug the router and the modem and turn off the 360. Connect an Ethernet cable to one of the out ports of the preexisting router then connect the cord to the back of your 360. Plug everything back in and turn and give the modem and router about 3 minutes to reboot.
Once you have given everything a few minutes to reboot you can turn the 360 back on. If you have already set up a gamer profile you will see the Xbox Live screen. If you have not set up an account you will be prompted to do so. All you need to do is follow the on screen instructions. It is a pretty cut and dry process and should not take more than 10 minutes of your time.
If you want to go wireless or you must go wireless you will need to get the Xbox360 wireless network adapter. The adapters are available at most stores that sell 360 games or you can order it online. Once you have the adapter unplug any Ethernet cable you might have plugged into the 360 then clip the Network adapter to the back of the 360. It is really easy to see where it belongs, but just in case, the adapter will sit right alongside the USB port which is right above the Ethernet port. Once you have clipped it in plug the USB cable that is attached to the adapter into the port on the Xbox 360. Flip up the antenna that is laying flat against the adapter and you are set, well almost set.
Turn on the 360 and head into the System tray. You will see Network options, go ahead into that screen and follow it through to the “Edit Settings” subcategory. The Network name should appear on a list of available networks. Select your network and enter the password, if there is a password. Exit out and you should be ready to play.
It is all a very simple process and Microsoft has gone ahead and made it super easy to setup the network in no time at all. From start to finish the entire setup should only take about 15 minutes, tops!

This mode is also called enable mode because you get to it with the enable command. The command prompt on this mode is “router#”. From the privileged EXEC mode you can start configuring the device by typing “configure terminal”.
Router Memory Types
A Cisco router has four memory types:
ROM: This is where the POST script of the router is located. The POST software (Power On Self Test) is used during startup to perform the initial hardware checking of the device. The ROM also holds a mini-IOS used for password recovery.
RAM: This is where the running configuration is located. After the device boots up, the IOS software is loaded into RAM. Also, RAM holds routing tables, network parameters during operation etc. When configuring the router, we actually change the running-configuration which as we said is stored into RAM
NVRAM: When we save the running-configuration (using the command “write”) it is stored into the NVRAM and becomes the startup-configuration. After rebooting the router, the startup-configuration is loaded from the NVRAM.

When you issue the “show running-configuration” command on the router you instruct the device to display the current running configuration in RAM. When you issue the “show startup-configuration” command you instruct the router to display the stored configuration in the NVRAM.
