A fraction of the working population in the United Kingdom are enjoying job satisfaction. Of course, most will just stay there. You’ve reached this paragraph, which if nothing else means that you know it’s time to make a change.

Before you make decisions on specific training programs, discuss your thoughts with an industry expert who will be able to guide you on what to look for. Someone who has the ability to ask questions about your likes and dislikes, and find out what types of work suit you:

* Do you like to be around others at work? Perhaps you like being a team player? Or you may prefer task-orientated work that only you know how to deal with?

* What elements are you looking for from the area of industry you choose? – We all know that things have changed, look at building and banking for instance.

* After re-training, how long a career do you hope for, and can the industry you choose provide you with that possibility?

* Will the information you learn allow you to find new work easily, and be gainfully employed until you wish to retire?

A predominant industry in the UK to meet the above criteria is Information Technology. There’s a need for more knowledgeable workers in this market, – take a look at any jobsite and you will find them yourself. Don’t let people tell you it’s only geeky nerds looking at their computerscreens the whole time – there’s a lot more to it than that. Most of the people in the computer industry are ordinary people, with well paid and stimulating jobs.

A big contender for the top potential problem for IT students is usually having to turn up to ‘In Centre’ days or workshops. Most trainers wax lyrical on the plus points of attending, but most students end up finding them a major problem because of:

* Masses of travelling to and from the training centre – usually 100’s of miles.

* Getting frequent time off work – most schools can only give weekday availability and often group days together in a clump. This isn’t ideal for most people who work, and it’s made more problematic when travel time is included.

* And don’t overlook the lost vacation days. We typically get twenty days annual leave. If over 50 percent is used in classes, then we aren’t going to be doing much vacationing.

* ‘In-Centre’ days normally become quickly full, meaning we have to accept the ‘2nd best’ solution.

* Many students want to study at a somewhat more suitable pace – rather than be dictated to by the rest of the class. Sometimes this causes a classic case of ‘classroom tension’.

* Rising travel prices – driving or taking public transport backwards and forwards to the training facility plus over-night bed and breakfast can cost a lot over several visits. With only five to ten centre-days at a cost of 35 pounds for one over-night room, plus 40 pounds for petrol and food at 15 pounds, we arrive at four to nine hundred pounds of add-on cost.

* Don’t risk the chance of being overlooked for potential advancement or wage increases because your employer knows you’re retraining.

* It’s common to find that, at times, it’s uncomfortable to raise questions in a class full of our fellow students – because none of us wants to look like we don’t understand.

* When your work takes you away from home, it’s a fact of life that days in-centre can become impossible to get to – unfortunately however, the fees were paid along with everything else at the start.

Many students discover a more flexible approach is to use videoed workshops in the comfort of your own home – studying at your own pace, when it suits you – not some other person. You can study at home on your computer or why not in the garden on a laptop. If you’ve got questions, then get onto the live 24×7 support (that should’ve been packaged with any technical type of training.) You’ll never have to write notes again – every lesson is laid out for you already. And if you want to repeat anything, just do it. Basically: You avoid a bunch of hassle, save money and time, and altogether avoid polluting the environment.

Of course: a training itself or an accreditation isn’t the end-goal; a job you’re training for is. Far too many training organisations place too much importance on the actual accreditation. Avoid becoming one of those unfortunate students who select a program that seems ‘fun’ or ‘interesting’ – and get to the final hurdle of an accreditation for something they’ll never enjoy.

Be honest with yourself about earning potential and how ambitious you are. Usually, this will point the way to what exams will be required and what’ll be expected of you in your new role. We advise all students to speak to a skilled advisor before they make a decision on a particular learning programme. This is required to ensure it features what is required for the career path that has been chosen.

An effective package of training will have Microsoft (or key company) simulation materials and exam preparation packages. Often students can be thrown off course by practising exam questions that are not from authorised sources. It’s not uncommon that the question formats and phraseology is startlingly different and it’s important to prepare yourself for this. A way to build self-confidence is if you verify your knowledge by doing tests and practice exams to prepare you for taking the proper exam.

Be careful that the certifications you’re studying for are recognised by industry and are up-to-date. ‘In-house’ exams and the certificates they come with are generally useless. All the major commercial players such as Microsoft, Adobe, CompTIA or Cisco each have nationally approved proficiency courses. Huge conglomerates such as these will ensure your employability.

The somewhat scary thought of landing your first computer related job is often eased by some companies, via a Job Placement Assistance facility. Because of the growing demand for appropriately skilled people in Britain at the moment, it’s not too important to get too caught up in this feature though. It’s actually not as hard as some people make out to land a job once you’re well trained and qualified.

One important thing though, don’t procrastinate and wait until you’ve qualified before getting your CV updated. As soon as your training commences, list what you’re working on and place it on jobsites! Having the possibility of an interview is far better than not even being known about. A decent number of junior jobs are got by people who are still at an early stage in their studies. Actually, an independent and specialised local recruitment consultancy (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) will be more pro-active than a division of a training company. In addition, they will no doubt know the area and local employers better.

To bottom line it, if you put the same amount of effort into securing a job as into studying, you’re not likely to experience problems. Some people bizarrely put hundreds of hours into their training and studies and do nothing more once qualified and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

Wii Fit Plus is a direct replacement for Nintendo Wii Fit. Hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, and hang on to your cash. You’ll also be able to choose where to take your exam – which means you can stay local. Is there a good reason to pay interest on a bigger loan than is necessary because you’ve paid early for examinations when you didn’t need to? Huge profits are netted by organisations charging upfront for all their exams – and banking on the fact that many won’t be taken. Remember, in the majority of cases of ‘exam guarantees’ – the company decides when you can re-take the exam. They’ll only allow a re-take once completely satisfied.

Exam fees averaged around the 112 pounds mark twelve months or so ago through VUE or Pro-metric centres in the UK. So why pay hundreds or thousands of pounds extra for ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when common sense dictates that the most successful method is a regular, committed, study programme, with an accredited exam preparation system.

Massive developments are flooding technology over the next generation – and this means greater innovations all the time. We’ve only just begun to see just how technology is going to shape our lives. Computers and the Internet will profoundly revolutionise the way we view and interact with the world as a whole over the coming years.

A usual IT technician throughout Britain has been shown to earn much more money than fellow workers in another industry. Standard IT salaries are hard to beat nationally. With the IT marketplace increasing nationally and internationally, it’s likely that the requirement for qualified professionals will continue to boom for years to come.

Too many colleges just do courses. Always use a provider that specialises in IT training geared to the needs of industry. Each type of role asks for different levels of qualifications and skills, so we strongly recommend that you take advice from an industry expert before settling on a course or career path. That way you can be confident that the syllabus of your learning package fits the skill set of the job you want.

The CompTIA A+ training consists of four exams; A+ competency is given when you’ve passed the Essentials exam and one other from the remaining three areas. This is why most colleges offer only two of the training courses.

If you add into the mix user-skills such as ECDL, MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) or MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician), it will open the door to help-desk work. This could involve solving problems and giving instructions verbally over the phone for a client to follow, or more increasingly using remote access tools to take over someone’s computer via the internet or network.

If you would like to be the person who wanders around a company fixing and supporting, you’ll need to add CompTIA Network+, or consider the Microsoft networking route (MCSA – MCSE) as you’ll need a deeper understanding of how networks work.

If this sort of work is your thing, learning to you probably means getting stuck in and having a go! If all else fails read the instructions, – a practical hands-on approach to life. Any manuals you own probably gather dust and it’s a long time since you read anything from cover to cover.
