Don’t let college professors, web developers and other professionals fool you: creating a web site in this day and age is easy! These people are perpetrating the myth that not only is creating a web site hard, it requires technical knowledge such as HTML, CSS and PHP. While it is useful to some extent to know these things, if you’re just trying to put together a web site for your club/organization, family or event, learning these skills is not only overkill, it’s a waste of time.

Creating A Web Site The Smart Way
The smart way to create a web site in this day and age is by using an existing content management system (CMS). A CMS allows you to quickly and easily add, change and remove content to your site such as articles, images and videos. A good CMS lets you do this without having to know any HTML whatsoever. Why reinvent the wheel when you can harness the power of an already existing system.

Which CMS is best?
I’ve used many CMS’ to create many web sites and they all have their pros and cons. Some are better suited for small blogs, others are better suited for running huge sites with lots of content. The one that I like best for all of the sites I create is Wordpress because it is free and open source.

Why Wordpress is a great CMS
Although it started as a blogging platform, Wordpress has evolved over the years into a a bonafide CMS, capable of running small blogs, static business sites and huge magazine-style sites. It’s also free and open-source which means that it is constantly being worked on by developers around the world who contribute their time and effort to improving Wordpress by fixing bugs and creating innovating new features.

Wordpress is easy to use
For being so powerful, Wordpress is surprisingly easy to use. You never have to edit any code manually (although you can if you want to!) and everything from installing a new template to adding features to your sidebar is done using a graphical user interface (GUI). Publishing new content is easy as well and if you’re computer literate enough to use Microsoft Word, you will be able to use Wordpress.

The days of having to learn all about HTML before building a web site are over. By using a CMS such as Wordpress, you can dramatically decrease the time between conception of an idea for a web site and actually putting it online. This is truly the smart and easy way to build web sites.

When most people decide that they want to create a web site for the first time, they might browse some HTML tutorials and download a trial of Adobe Dreamweaver. They might spend hours writing HTML code in Dreamweaver and end up cobbling together an ugly web site that looks like it is straight out of 1995, usually complete with animated GIFs and blinking hyperlinks. Unfortunately, these methods are long outdated and in today’s world, there is a major shortcut to learning how to create a web site. This shortcut is usually not taught in schools, but I’m going to share it with you today.

What is the shortcut?
The shortcut to creating a web site for the first time is to use an open source blogging platform called Wordpress. This means that instead of you having to learn HTML from scratch like the rest of us did a decade ago, you can build on all of this existing knowledge and technology and harness it to build your site. It’s easy to set up, simple to use and after you use it you’ll wonder why anybody ever does it the old-fashioned way.

What makes Wordpress so good?
Wordpress is free and open-source, which means that anybody can download the source code and modify it to suit their needs. This openness has created a large community of software developers that contribute time and effort to creating and improving the features, functionality and design of Wordpress. By using Wordpress, you are leveraging years of pooled community effort by thousands of developers. Doesn’t that sound a lot better than sitting in a library trying to learn HTML for the first time?

What can Wordpress do?
Wordpress is flexible and powerful enough to handle just about any web site you could come up with. It is best-suited for a blog-style site, but can also be molded to a traditional business site or even a magazine-style site such as CNN.com or Time.com. It’s very easy to publish written content as well as multimedia content because of Wordpress’ easy to use WYSIWYG editor. This means that if you are computer literate enough to use Microsoft Word, you’ll be able to use Wordpress effectively to publish your content.

Although learning how to create a web site for the first time can be intimidating for a first-timer, by going about it the right way, you can focus on creating quality content instead of the technical details of creating a web site. Now you know the shortcut to creating quality web sites and can leapfrog ahead of other people who are still struggling to get through that HTML book because you have learned why you should leverage the efforts of years of programming efforts. Good luck!
