It is a beautiful day here in central Florida. 88 degrees and breezy. It is the absolute perfect day to go to Taylor Park and have a BBQ dinner. When we first moved down to this area, this was the very first place I had ever seen a real live gator. I heard many incidences about them on the news showing up in your back yard, and imagined that this is how life in FL would be! I still have not seen a real alligator in the wild anywhere else!
I did a little research about them and was intrigued to find out that baby alligators actually get out of their eggs when they hatch with what is called an “egg tooth”. How interesting! They can live to be fifty years old in the wild, and much longer in captivity. The average length is about 13 ft., and they actually weigh about 800 pounds. Gators have been on this earth for two hundred million years and are considered as a living fossil from the reptile ages.
There are actually over a million alligators in the state of Florida alone! They are also widely populated in Louisiana as well. They are very protective of their territory, both male and female, and they consume food that cannot be eaten in one bite. They do what is known as a “death roll” in which they roll and tear chunks off of their victims. I always heard that if a gator comes after you, you should run in a zig zag pattern that will make it harder for them to catch you!
This week, a lady in Tampa had an alligator show up on her back porch. I’m telling you, no matter where you live, whether it be an alligator, fox, raccoon, bear, or home invader on your porch, the best thing to have is a home surveillance system to see what is lurking. A woman just last week was told there was a wild boar in her yard locally as well. She went outside and it came out and attacked her from behind her shed!
