Anyone can come up with a lot of reasons why they shouldn’t get a burglar alarm for their home or apartment. The problem is, most – if not all – of those reasons are not valid. Instead of coming up with excuses as to why you should not, consider why you should:

1. To prevent the burglary in the first place. The presence of a home security burglar alarm system means you are three times less likely to suffer a burglary (compared to a home with no security system). When burglars see the alarm company-provided signs and window stickers they move on to house without an alarm system. Don’t believe that works? Why would home insurance companies offer up to 20% off premiums for home with such a system? They know it greatly reduces the chances of a burglary.

2. Provide security while you are away. These systems can be programmed to automatically make phone calls when triggered. These can go to the police or fire department, neighbors, and your own cell phone. Not only that, but they can also serve as timed switches to turn on and off lights and television sets. It’s good to know that even though your property is empty, it is not unprotected.

3. Affordable. It is true that at one time a home security system was too expensive for the average household. That’s no longer the case. Especially with the advent and continuing advancements of wireless technologies, home burglar alarms have become quite affordable. Much of this is due to far greater ease of installation.

4. Cost efficient. Speaking of cost… If you are able to receive a 20% discount on your home insurance premium each month for having a burglar alarm in your home, how long will it take before the system pays for itself? Makes good money sense.

5. You can do it. Wireless security systems are very well within the “doable” range of even average do-it-yourselfers. These systems do not require running and hiding a wiring system throughout your house. If you can use a screwdriver and follow instructions, you are pretty much good to go.

6. Provide peace of mind. It only takes one home invasion, and the intruder doesn’t even have to steal anything to rob you of something very valuable – your peace of mind. No one likes to feel vulnerable or ill at ease, especially in their own home. A home security system can certainly help preserve those feelings of security and safety. What a great blessing to provide for your family.

But along with all of the other changes of pace that come with a home that’s far away from most things, including neighbors, there is the need to consider a new type of home security. It’s true that small towns feel safer than big cities, but just because you feel something doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the truth. While you’re learning how to relax, to slow your pace, and enjoy your new lifestyle, you’re also going to have to learn how to take care of your home.

If you’re really out in the boondocks, it’s important to have some sort of a sign in case you ever have an emergency that requires the fire department or police force. Think about something as simple as painting your coordinates or Global Positioning System (GPS) number on fence posts that mark your property boundaries. That way, if help ever needs to be sent, they’ll know that they have made it to the right place.

If you’re on a large enough property to need something that defines where your farm stops and your neighbors begins, you probably already have some sort of fence system in place. But a fence is about more than just keeping livestock in: it’s also about keeping bad guys out. Always keep track of how your fence is doing. If you see wear and tear that looks man-made instead of a result of the elements or wildlife, consider why that would be, and check up on it. Your home security starts with those fence posts, not your front door, and making your property look well-cared for and secure is a hugely helpful deterrent.

Now that you’re well informed on caring for the property far away from your home, it’s time to go over the different steps you need to take close to your farmhouse, home, or homestead. Be sure that your home has many of the same signs that are out on the front gate of your property: the more times you can possibly let someone know that they are trespassing, that this is private property, and that you may or may not have a dog to beware of, the less chance you have of getting robbed.

Signs or stickers associated with home security systems are sort of a good idea, but because in rural areas burglars have more time to investigate than they do in bustling suburban communities, you might actually want to have a home alarm if you’re going to advertise that you do. There’s a lot more time for them to poke around and look for the signs of a system, and if they find that you don’t, that sign is going to be pretty worthless.

A little bit of work around your home and property can ensure that you get to enjoy the easy country living, that reason you left the city in the first place, for years to come. Chances are, you don’t have a thing to worry about, but it’s always important to be prepared, even if you aren’t in the middle of a big city.

Whether you’re living in a brownstone or a farm house, home security is still a very big concern. Instead of just advertising a non-existant home alarm, why not actually get one?

Knowing what to do when there is a fire is essential for your survival. Although you do your best to prevent it from happening, fire is always possible to occur. Fire can start due to circumstances beyond your control. The important thing is that you know what you need to do when it happens.

Being ready is very important. Your family, school, or organization should have an escape plan when there is a fire. There should be fire safety signs in the workplace and in other establishments. When you see these signs, you should take time to familiarize them.

In addition, it also pays to attend trainings on basic firefighting. Local fire departments conduct trainings occasionally. They aim to raise awareness in the community regarding fire safety procedures. They also teach individuals how to use the fire extinguishers properly.

Here are important things you should remember when there is fire:

1. It is very important that you stay calm. When you panic, you will not be able to focus on what you should do. Staying calm will also increase your chance of survival because you can think straight and apply what you have learned to the situation.

2. Call for help immediately. It is very important that the fire department knows about this right away. If you cannot get to a phone right away, call for someone to do it.

3. Sound the alarm as well. The establishment should have this in every level of the building. This will notify the people in the establishment that there is a fire. As a response, the people will get out of the building right away. You should also do your best to get out of the structure.

After calling for help and notifying everyone through the fire alarm system, you can fight the fire. When you do, remember the following:

1. Assess the flames. See to it that the extinguisher can handle it. If the fire has not grown yet and it is contained in one place, you can attempt to put it out with a fire extinguisher. This makes it important that you know how to use the tool. If the flames have grown, do not attempt to fight it, grab the extinguisher and bring it with you because you can use it to escape.

2. When using the extinguisher, see to it that you have an area to escape. See to it that you have an escape route on your back. To ensure that this is the case, check the fire safety signs before attempting to stop the flames.

3. See to it that you have the right fire extinguisher. You will normally see extinguishers intended for the fuel sources in the area. However, you have to check it. This is to avoid problems resulting from the use of the wrong device.

The important thing you need to do in order to survive is to know the different ways out. If you attempt to fight the fire using the extinguisher, see to it that it is possible for you to leave the area when the flame grows.

There are several fire equipments to keep you safe. You can use sprinklers, fire hose, fire blankets, and fire extinguishers. Having these devices installed is not enough. Keep the following in mind:

• The device has to be visible. Your employees should know the location of these tools. It will be useless to have fire-fighting tools if you cannot find it when a fire breaks.

• It should be accessible as well. Visibility is not enough. You should be able to reach it easily as well. Remember, when a fire starts, you have to respond right away. In order to do this, you have to get hold of the tools that can stop it right away.

• Make sure that the people in your establishment know how to use the devices. If you are not equipped with the knowledge to train them, you can ask someone from the fire department to assist you.

• You should also remember to do regular maintenance check on your equipments. Ask your manufacturer regarding this.

Now that you have the needed equipments, see to it that you have the valuable signs and exits. The exit sign has to be visible. If the warning signs are necessary, install them as well.

Apply Necessary Precautions to Prevent Fire

It is still better if you do not have to deal with fire. It is better to see unused fire hose nearby. You can achieve this by setting fire safety policies in the work area. Below are the additional guidelines you can apply:

• Ask an electrician to monitor your office equipments and electrical lines regularly.

• Smoking should not be allowed in the work area.

• Manage your flammable objects and materials properly.

• Put up signs that warn about the hazards in the workplace. You can also add prohibition signs.

If you anticipate problems regarding fire, you will be able to do certain things that will prevent fire from happening. You can also rely on fire fighters to have a talk with your employees regarding fire safety.

Pet lovers know that it can be stressful to leave beloved pets at home every day. While we are at work, school, and all of our other commitments, our pets are at home eagerly anticipating our return. And while it’s unpleasant to think about, pet owners should be aware that pets are vulnerable if the unthinkable happens while we are away.

Every year, an estimated 500,000 pets are affected by home fires. Many of those pets fall victim when an otherwise unoccupied house goes up in flames. For pet owners, this scenario is a nightmare. What makes it even worse is that in many cases, it can be prevented.

Recently the American Kennel Club, the National Volunteer Fire Council, and home security system provider ADT teamed up to offer some valuable advice on keeping pets safe from home fires. Their recommendations began with equipping homes with smoke detectors and a fire detection system.

A home that is equipped with multiple layers of fire protection and defense will be less likely to suffer damages and result in pet injury. A smoke detector will alert any people inside the house to a fire, and a fire detection system will alert the authorities. If no one is home, the fire detection system can get the fire department to your home before your pets are harmed.

Another excellent way to protect pets from fire injuries is to put pet alert window clings on your windows. These stickers tell rescue personnel that there are pets in the home that need to be rescued in the event of an emergency. ADT provides these stickers at no charge.

If you have pet alert window clings on your windows, be sure to keep the information accurate and up to date. Listing the correct number of pets on the window clings will help ensure that rescue personnel look for all of the pets who may be inside the house.

Pet owners can also take steps toward preventing pet-related fires. It’s a little-known fact that pets can accidentally start fires. To avoid this tragic scenario, pet proof your home.

Don’t leave lit candles unattended around pets. Secure any cooking appliances that could be knocked over and start a fire, such as hot plates and electric skillets. Also secure any loose electrical wires and cords. Puppies and kittens love to chew on things and can seriously injure themselves or start a fire by chewing on a cord.

Restrict your pet’s access to rooms that contain hazards. If you can’t keep your pets away from potentially dangerous places or items, confine them to a safe room or a kennel while you are away from the home.

Preventing pet-related fires really can be as simple as using common sense and avoiding dangerous scenarios. And if a home fire should occur, an ADT fire detection system can get help out in a hurry and minimize the damage to your property and your furry and feathered friends.

ADT security systems are the leading residential security systems in the U.S. ADT security can help protect your home and family with state-of-the art equipment and round-the-clock monitoring. You can’t go wrong when you choose America’s number-one name in home security, ADT.

The traditional picture of a home security system is really nothing more than an alarm system that sounds when an intruder enters the home. This system is usually connected to a monitoring center, which dispatches emergency personnel when an alarm sounds. However, today’s security systems are much more complex and capable of offering much more protection than this. What are the new advents in home security? How can they help you gain better protection and greater safety for your family and your possessions?

Fire Protection – One of the most common additions to a home security system is fire protection. While smoke detectors may help alert you and your family to a fire, you must still dial 911 to report the fire. This can take valuable time, during which you should be making sure that your family and pets are able to escape from the home. A professionally monitored security system can offer you great protection in the case of fire and even alert the fire department as soon as the signal comes through (which is instant, by the way). This ensures that you and your family are safe from harm and that emergency help is dispatched more quickly.

Carbon Monoxide – Carbon monoxide is a frightening thing. It is odorless, colorless and tasteless. It is also a merciless killer. Every year, hundreds of people are killed in their homes by carbon monoxide. Traditional alarm systems could not protect against this threat, but modern security systems can and do reduce the risk of carbon monoxide threatening your life or the lives of your family. With carbon monoxide monitors in your home, you can rest easy, knowing that as soon as this gas is detected, the alarm will alert both you and the monitoring center.

Flood Warning – If your home is located anywhere with potential flooding, you know how important it is that you know immediately if a threat arises. A professionally installed security system can be equipped with flood detectors to alert you and your family to the threat of potential flooding, before it becomes a disaster. This gives you the chance to escape your home, to alert rescue personnel or even to take preventative steps to safeguard your home from the impending flood danger.

Two-Way Communications – Modern security systems also offer incredible communications with the monitoring center. When an alert sounds, the monitoring center will contact you. Even if you are unable to reach the telephone, the two-way communications system built into the control panel enables you to speak with the monitoring center. This means that if you have slipped and fallen, are trapped by flames of flood, cannot find your way out due to smoke, or are even threatened by a burglar, you will be able to speak with help. In addition, if you are unable to respond to the operator, help will be dispatched immediately to ensure that you, your family and your home are safe. There is no better way to protect your family and your home than with a modern home security system.

ADT Security systems are the leading residential security systems in the U.S. ADT home security can help protect your home and family with state-of-the art equipment and round-the-clock monitoring. You can’t go wrong when you choose America’s number-one name in home security, ADT Security.

You can always play around with flames, use them to light up your cigarette or even create a peaceful environment. However, when you start to abuse the things that cause it to light up, it can go from good to worse. People can get hurt, burned and the worse die. Your once called a lovely home can turn into ashes before your eyes. All the time, money, effort can go down the drain simply if a small flame is not used properly.

Putting out fire when it is at its worst form can be very dangerous. The lives of the victims are already at risk and more people come in to make the risk even bigger. That is why it is important for people to know about fire fighting before facing fire. However, you do not to be a professional to fight fire. You can actually do as a preventive measure to stop a small case of smoldering or flaming fire. Here is how:

1. Turn off sources of electricity and gas.
2. Remove anything that could easily burn or even catch fire.
3. Get your fire extinguisher and use it to smother the fire at its base. Just make sure that you have the right extinguisher on hand. Note: It is better that you use a multi-rated extinguisher at home.
4. If fire is slowly spreading, take time to wear fire protection equipment like gloves or boots.
5. If you catch fire, do not panic or run around, stop drop and roll. You instruct the same thing if it happened to another person. If it cannot be controlled, grab a fabric and wrap it around the person with a little pressure.
6. If the griller starts to ignite flames and unfortunately, dried leaves and other plants catches it, run to get the nearest hose and hose down the burning object to avoid spreading. Turn off the griller and cover it.

Our job is to control the fire to avoid it from spreading. However, you have to evaluate the situation if you still can handle it. If not, it is time to call the fire department, as it gets worst. It is already their job to put out uncontrollable fire. If they ask for your help, do help but also evaluate your capabilities if things ask of you is something that you know. Always gear up before heading to battle and use fire protection equipment.

In addition, if fire is silently going on inside the house, ask someone to inform the neighbors. Some of them might be able to help. If smoke and fumes start to build up inside, get out if you do not want to die of asphyxiation. Always remember not to panic in this situation. You will not be able to do things rightly.

Fire fighting is about securing safety. Do no do it unless you know exactly what you are doing. In case of outrageous fires, leave it the fire fighters, as they are better equipped in doing this job.

When fire emergencies happen, our first notion will be to put it out. You may have your extinguishers with you and you wil deliberately put out fire when you can. However, if we cannot stop it, the next thing you will be doing is to head to the door and get our of the place before you get trapped. This is actually one of the smartest thing to do when you cannot handle the flames.

It will not make you less of a man when you decide to head out the door when you cannot control the fire. You do not have to be the hero. As they say, it is your job to prevent fire from happening but it is not your job to put out cases of fire beyond control. That is what the fire department is for. The best thing you can do at that point in time is to secure the safety of your yourself, your family and others. And when you go down, you can be the informant of the fire fighters that way, they will know what is going on inside.

Therefore, it is really important for you to find the fire exit. You have to know this place because this will be your only escape route in times of fire: not the elevator, not the escalator but just the fire exit. For this reason, it is very important to put fire exit signs on it.

Why do you need to put one?

Precisely it is there for recognition. This will be good in case of emergency. You do not have to worry about finding the exit because it is just right there before your eyes. Besides, you do not have to waste time opening the doors just to look for the escape door.

Advantages of Using Self luminous exit signs

There are different kinds of signs but the best that you can use are those capable of illuminating oneself. They are good because one, you do not have to use electricity for it to light up. On top of that if there will be black outs, they will still be seen. They work like your watches, that glows in the dark, so that you can tell the time even when there is no light. This is just the economical way to put up fire exit signs.

Why use other devices that could use up your electricities and becomes useless during black outs. This is the most reliable signs that you can use to day. You do not have to worry also about changing batteries from time to time. You can save money from your expenses because these signs are not high maintenace.

Just make sure you install them the right way. So that they will not fall easily with a simple bang on the door. And for maintenance, it is just as simple as making sure that dirt and dust do not make the color dull. Simple wiping will do. Now, where is the difficulty in using these signs? They are simply fuzz-free.

It is the primary responsibility of child care providers like teachers and parents to teach children about fire prevention and safety. It is an all year round concern especially that fires often happen inside the home. Teaching basic fire protection techniques in children will definitely increase their chances in surviving this tragedy. Here are 7 fundamental tips kids can learn about safety in fires.

1. Have an escape route planned. In planning for an escape route for your family, it is important to have two methods to escape in each part of the house. This is done in the likelihood that your other exit is blocked or bursting in flames. Remind the children to never to leave things that can obstruct passageway to an exit. Fire safety techniques also include teaching children how to cover their face and use a towel in grabbing items to prevent burning themselves.

2. Instruct children how to dial 911 or the fire emergency number. Knowing the local number for the fire department is significant. Emphasize this by letting them practice using an unplugged phone.

3. Teach children about escape ladders and finding their way out without lights on. If your house has a second floor, escape ladders should be placed near the windows. Let your children practice using this fire safety exit. If there are small children, then let them practice from the first floor window so they will have a clear idea on what to expect in case a fire does break out. It is anticipated that a power outage can occur in a fire breakout. Teach your children how to find their way into the dark by blindfolding him and letting him feel his way into a room.

4. Provide them with basic information on smoke detectors and fire alarms. Teach children about fire prevention equipment like smoke detectors and fire alarms. They should be able to associate the sound of an alarm with the need of evacuating themselves out of the house. Regularly check these devices and change batteries to ensure that it is operating properly.

5. Teach them how to stop, drop and roll if their clothes catch fire. There is a possibility that a child may catch fire with his clothes. Make them understand the stop, drop, and roll technique to decrease risk of burn injuries.

6. Practice fire drill exercise with your kids monthly. Fire drills with your whole family every month is one way of ensuring they are ready and equipped with the basic fire safety skills.

7. Clearly instruct your children to never go back to the burning house no matter what. Tragedies often happen when survivors of a fire go back to the burning house to save someone else. Instill in your children to never return inside the house under any circumstances even if a member of the family or a pet is still missing. Report this to the professional firefighters to avoid further injuries or deaths.

It is always a good idea for parents to talk to their children on what they can do to escape a fire emergency. Different families may have different strategies but what is most important is that they know the fundamentals techniques in surviving a fire. Remember that being prepared will definitely save you and your children’s lives.

Fires cause devastating damage to property and even death to a lot of people. The risk of getting injured in a fire or being a fire casualty is greater especially for people with physical, mental and sensory disabilities. The good news is that deaths from fires are preventable just as long as a disabled person is equipped with proper devices such as fire alarms and knowledgeable on how to escape safely from a fire outbreak.

As a person with a disability, you should be more cautious because of your physical limitations and decreased ability to react in a fire emergency. Some disabled people are typically independent and would not wish to change their lifestyle from other people. Unfortunately, this state of mind may cause you to overlook necessary fire safety needs. In some situations, disabled people may require the help of caregivers to practice fire safety techniques.

Although you have the right to live where you choose, it is recommended that you select a location on the ground or first floor of a building. It is also advised to have the apartment near a fire exit to make your escape easier. Special considerations should be given in making a plan of your escape. You must learn two possible exits from every room. To make sure you can get through all these planned exits, you should check ahead of time especially if you are using a wheelchair or a walker.

Some fire safety drills and escape plans exclude people with disabilities. Consequently, your suggestions on fire safety and needs are unfulfilled. It is significant that you speak up and ensure that you are a part of the planning process. If you are living alone, you should speak with your neighbors and building manager concerning escape plans and practice fire drills with them. Always have a phone near your bed and memorize the emergency number for the local fire department.

People with disabilities should be well-informed on fire warning devices such as fire alarms and smoke detectors. Smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or a flashing light is available for the deaf. You can also request the manager building to install smoke alarms on each level of your apartment. Ensure that they are tested monthly and functioning properly. Batteries are changed every year or when necessary.

Limitations like decreased mobility, sight and hearing can prevent a person from making a quick reaction necessary to escape from a fire outbreak. It really depends on his physical restrictions but you can still take numerous precautions and plan accordingly so you can protect yourself from the dangers fire can bring.

Summer is the time of the year where family and friends enjoy the weather by engaging in outdoor activities. Although it is a time to have fun, you should never take for granted the importance of being safe from fires this season. It is just as imperative as being safe inside your homes. There are a lot of outdoor activities that are prone to starting a fire. Some of them involves caravanning, barbecuing, camping and boating.

It is also a great time to teach children on fire protection and safety techniques. It is an opportunity to educate them on the benefits of fire. They need to see and appreciate that the same fire that cooks our food is the same fire that can damage property and cause death. Nowadays, children are less exposed to fire such as starting a fire to heat the house than the past generations. The further away they are in acquiring knowledge of fire the most likely these young people will take for granted the importance of fire safety choices. It is essential that they are well informed and prepared in potential fire emergency.

Here are some fire safety tips to remember to stay away from fire this summertime.

Camping and caravanning:

1.When planning to camp, inquire about the fire safety arrangements of the place and locate the nearest telephone booth.

2.Keep spare batteries handy at all times.

3.Tents should be at least 6-7 meters apart and mounted away from parked cars.

4.Do not store flammable liquids inside the tent and keep away from children.

5.Be informed on local landmarks and keep a map so you can give the fire department your exact location in the event of a fire.

Boating:

1.Always keep track of your location so you can report exactly where you are to emergency services in the event of a fire in your boat.

2.Equipment for fire protection should be available on your boat such as fire blankets and fire extinguishers.

3.Maintain a smoke alarm and install it in a strategic place where it can surely wake up people on the boat in a fire emergency.

4.Do not allow debris to build up in the bridges.

5.Regularly maintain the boat’s electrical system.

6.In the possibility of fire on the boat, get everyone out and call the Coastguard by radio.

Barbecuing:

1.Use an approved fire starter liquid designed for barbeque grills. Do not use gasoline.

2.Store the fire starter liquid in a safe and secure place out of children’s reach.

3.Make sure that when you dispose charcoal ash, it is completely extinguished because live coals are fire starters.

4.Prevent fire hazards by ensuring that the barbecue area is free from combustible materials such as paper, twigs, and napkins.

No matter what season, it is important to protect your home and family from fire outbreaks. Be vigilant and cautious in engaging in outdoor activities. Do not let the fun distract you from following fire safety precautions. It is always better to prevent fire than fighting it.

Our homes and environment are surrounded with flammable materials. Even with the presence of water, many items in your surroundings can be a good fuel to fire. That is why a small flame or even its residues should not be neglected. If in any case, that this will be exposed to flammable items, you can expect the worse to happen.

Since we are aware that most items can make small flames big, we should be ready at all times to fight it. There are several things that you can do in cases when the worse is about to happen.

1. Switch off any source of the flames. If it is within your reach, as much as possible turn it off. However, before doing it make sure that you evaluate your surroundings properly. Check if it feasible, if not leave it be.

2. If you think that the origin of flame is surrounded with combustible materials, try to keep them away so that they cannot catch fire. That if only these items can be secured.

3. Once you see smoke or flames arising, try to pound or beat it. This is to put it in a halt. If you think that it will not work, check the availability of the different types of fire extinguishers and identify which one you can use.

4. If you catch fire within yourself, do not panic. Stop, drop and roll. If in any case, the your company is the one who got the fire, look for any blanket and soak it with water and cover it up on the affected part.

5. If you think that, you cannot handle it, call someone from the fire department and notify them right away. While, they are still on the way, secure the safety of your members. However, do not call fire department if your case is just about a trash can on fire. You will end up wasting their time and their other opportunities to help worse cases.

6. In case if it worsens, identify exit points right away. Ask every one to move quickly but never to panic. At times, fire can worsen in just a matter of minutes when there is a perfect blend of fire, fuel and heat. Therefore, if it gets bigger and the more it is difficult to fight with water and other devices, never attempt to salvage heavy items. As much as possible, secure yourself first.

7. In using the different types of fire extinguishers, make sure to aim at the base of the fire. Do not target the flames because it is useless. Make sure to put out one segment before moving on to another.

There are things that you can do in order to avoid getting hurt in these incidences. The first thing is always to evaluate what you can do and what you cannot do. For you to do this, you need to have presence of mind. They key is to never PANIC. It is all right to be moderately anxious because it keeps you going. However, never reach to the point of loosing composure because at times like this you would not want to loose your right mind.

Everyone should be prepared, in the event of a house fire. Almost all house fires start at night while people are sleeping, so it is important to have a warning system that will wake you in the event of a deadly fire. Smoke detectors save lives.

The U.S. government recommends that every household have several working detectors installed in case of emergencies. Just make sure you have at least one. Your safety is in your hands.

Every general hardware and home supply store carries battery operated smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for carbon monoxide detection. Most of these are powered by 9-volt batteries. Read the back of the box to be sure you know which type of batteries you need to buy. Purchase enough to cover each level of your home.

Install an alarm inside many different areas of your house. Some communities have a service where the fire department will come to your home and install the alarms for you. This service is very handy for the elderly and for those unable to move easily on their own.

Even the smallest amount of smoke can cause smoke detectors to go off; so many times it will go off during cooking. Just fan the smoke away, and it will be fine. Take comfort from the fact that it will be sure to go off in a real emergency.

You should make sure you have enough detectors to cover every level of your home. The more areas covered the better. Some companies and the fire department will provide the service of hanging the alarms for you if you wish.

Your new smoke detectors should last for a long time after the date of purchase. Be sure to record when you bought the alarms somewhere in a household record. Monthly testing of your alarms is a necessary preventative maintenance task for your home. It is also wise to sit down and plan with your family what to do in the event of a fire emergency or if your carbon monoxide detectors go off. There is no such thing as being too prepared. Being prepared with a system of alarms backed up with extinguishers and an escape plan, as well as two way radios for contact if separated, will maximize your chances of getting out alive.

No one wants to think that a fire will happen in their own home, but it does happen and more often than one would think. Most often it is accidental. I remember as a child a fire in my own home. My Dad had a deep fat fryer plugged in getting hot (my Mom is English, so had fish and chips for dinner every Saturday night). He was getting ready to go pick up my Mom from work, was distracted by a phone call and forgot to unplug the fryer before leaving. There were four of us kids at home when the kitchen caught fire. We were fine, there was a quick response from the fire department and damage was contained. We got to live at a hotel for six weeks, they had a swimming pool so it was cool for a 10 year old. But we were lucky. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the US and the leading cause of home fire injuries.

Other causes of home fires include heating mishaps, tobacco products, and candles (there is a difference in the quality of candles!). The last main reason for home fires is children playing with fire. When fires strike a home, it is quick and devastating. So most personal things of importance in a home should be protected from fire.

One of the best ways to protect important family valuables and documents is with fire safes. I was wondering what the difference was between a fireproof safe and a fire-resistant safe, and discovered that there is no such thing as a fireproof safe! Any material can suffer damage from heat and fire if exposed to a high enough temperature for a long enough time. But some materials are good at resisting extreme heat and fire for a limited period of time, so fire safes constructed with these material are designated as “fire resistant”.

Average home fires peak at a temperature of 800 – 1200 degrees Fahrenheit (duration and peak temperature varies with size and construction material of home). Estimated time for firemen to get a home fire under control is 15 – 30 minutes. Since paper chars at 402°F, to protect important documents, a fire safes internal temperature needs to remain below 350°F. So at a minimum, a good fire resistant safe will keep the internal temperature below 350°F when exposed to a fire for 30 minutes that reaches a peak temperature of 1200°F.

Fire safes undergo severe independent laboratory tests, being subjected to extremely hot fires for a specified period of time (either a 1 1/2 hour, 1 or 2 hours), and some to fire impact tests (simulating a safe being blown up or falling through burnt floor boards). There are different degrees of UL classification (standardized rating earned from the Underwriters Laboratories), but to earn a rating the documents stored inside must remain completely undamaged. DIfferent companies use different type of tests, but the standardized UL rating allows different brands to be compared on equal footing. Most companies test their fire safes by simulating a house fire using a special furnace, others will actually use a simulated home fire to test their safes.

Usually, the higher quality (hence more expensive) fire safes will protect your important items for a longer time at higher temperatures. Decide what is best for you. For most, fire safes protecting against an average home fire is enough. But if you live in an area where there are possible wild fires, it is not enough. Wild fires can reach temperatures up to 2000°F and burn for a couple of fires before it moves on and temperatures can cool. Also consider the size and flammability of your home, and its proximity to a fire department. All these, plus more, can be factors to consider when buying the best fire safe for you and your family.

Today, people are taking advantage of the many benefits that they can get by using GPS and in fact, the latest model automobiles are in fact, being equipped with GPS navigation systems and the time is also not far away when GPS navigation becomes common feature in every new automobile being sold in not only the US, but also in the rest of the world.

Increasing Popularity

Cell phone GPS is now becoming very popular and today, it allows you to, whenever you call the police or even fire department these authorities will be able to immediately know your location – thanks to these new devices. In fact, people now are actually taking this technology for granted – much in the same way that the Internet is also being taken for granted today.

It is interesting to note that this technology was first developed in the seventies and was at that time only being used by the military forces of the United States of America. In fact, even now the military (US) can cut off GPS access at any time that it so desires. What’s more, before this technology became so commonplace its civilian use was rather limited and it did not go beyond what can best be described as Selective Availability.

In any case, modern GPS systems involve using the approximate twenty-four different satellites (military) that are in orbit in space at an estimated altitude of about eleven thousand miles which ensures that at any given point of time a GPS receiver will receive its signals from a minimum of six satellites that will be providing service at any point in time. There are therefore four satellites that are spaced at equal intervals in six different orbital paths and any or all of these satellites can provide signals to earth throughout the day and night and weather conditions too will not affect the quality of its signals.

At present, latency is a major obstacle and downside to using a GPS system. The sad truth is that each of the six satellites that send signals to earth will be situated at various distances from your set and the satellites too will also be rotating around the earth at very high speeds and this in turn leads to lack of synchronization in signals being received by a particular GPS set.

A GPS device is an excellent means of keeping track of where you are and most of the modern devices come loaded with a number of GPS maps that will ensure that you never get lost. Unfortunately, today the GPS is still not quite as accurate as we would like and accuracy is in fact only at its highest when the device is not in motion and is still.
