There are so many electronic products on the market now. It used to be a High Street shop selling TV and HiFi. Now there is just about anything you can think of in an electronics shop. The only thing you’ll need for this tutorial is a blank DVD. A blank DVD can hold about 4,500 Megabytes of data. Each of your pictures is probably about 1.6 megabytes. Based on those two sizes you should be able to backup about 2,812 pictures per DVD. Ok, lets get started.

2. Right click a folder containing some pictures and then click “send to” the select “DVD RW Drive”.

3. A Window will appear asking you to give the disc a name. Enter whatever name you’d like.

4. Windows Vista will begin formating the DVD. After the format is completed Windows will then start to burn your pictures to the disc. This process can take approx. 1 to 30 minutes.

5. After the disc has completed the burning process a window will pop open showing you the contents of the burned disc.

6. Click the eject button. The disc will not eject right away because windows needs to finalize the disc. This process can take about 5 minutes. When that’s completed the disc will pop out.

At this point the those pictures have been backed up DVD. They are still on your computer and you should leave them there because it’s always good to have your data in two places.

Today we live in a digital world, and many of our important documents are stored and backed up on external hard drives. How Do I Backup My Computer ? This is a very common asked by so many of my clients. There are dozens of ways to backup your computer and in this article I’m going to show you how to perform 3 of them. And they are…..

1. Backing up to CD or DVD.
2. Backing up to an external hard drive.
3. Backing up to secure online storage.

All 3 of these methods are not free, however they won’t “break the bank” either.

CD’s and DVD’s are very cheap (sometimes free), external hard drives can be found for less than $100 now and online backups are only about $50/year.

Not all backup methods are created equal. I’ll give you the pro’s and con’s for each one of them.

Why You Need To Backup Your Computer

Currently, hard drives in desktops or laptops have a limited lifespan and WILL fail after 2-3 years (sometimes earlier than that). When your hard drive fails there is a pretty good chance all your data will be unretrievable.

Hard drive failure isn’t the only reason to backup your computer, other data disasters can happen such as:

* fire
* flood
* theft
* accidental file modification
* accidental or intetentional file deletions

Those are just a few of the ways you can lose all your documents, pictures, music and so on.

Backup Your Computer To CD or DVD

Backing up to CD or DVD involves copying data such as your pictures to a blank CD or DVD disc.

Requirements:

* CD or DVD burner drive. Most computers that were made in the last 5 years usually have at least a CD burner. DVD burners are very affordable (some are as cheap as $40.00).
* Blank CD’s – Holds 700 Megabytes
* Single Layer DVD’s – 4.4 Gigabytes
* Dual Layer DVD’s – 8.5 Gigabytes

Pros:

* It’s cheap. CD’s and DVD’s cost almost nothing these days. Burners are very affordable as well.
* It’s very easy to burn a few files or folders.
* Backups are small and portable.
* Backups are safely accessable for 5 years.

Cons:

* It’s not automatic.
* Disc’s are easily scratched and may become unreadable if not taken care of properly.
* Succeptable to fire, flood, theft and damage.
* Large backups can take an hour or more.

How to burn a file or folder (easily):

1. Insert a blank CD or DVD into your burner.
2. Right click a file, folder or group of files and folders then select “Send To” and choose your CD \ DVD RW drive.
3. A prompt will pop up asking you to give the disc a name. Give it name and click Next.
4. Windows will now format the disc and begin burning it.
5. Eject the disc to complete the burning process.
6. Congratulations! You’ve just burned data to a disc. You may continue to add data to the disc until it’s full (see disc limits above).

Backup Your Computer To An External Hard Drive

Backing up your computer to an external USB hard drive is one of the most popular ways to backup these days. Simply purchase an external USB hard drive, plug it into a USB port on your computer and boom…instant storage!

There are 2 types of external USB hard drives. One drive requires an AC adapter and the other does not (it’s simply powered by the USB cable). Drives that require an AC adapter are usually larger and faster.

Requirements:

* 1 external USB hard drive.
* 1 USB cable.
* 1 USB 2.0 port on your computer.
* AC Adapter if the hard drive came with one.

How to install your external USB drive:

1. Plugin the USB cable to the back of the external hard drive.
2. Plugin the other end of the USB cable to an open USB 2.0 port on your computer.
3. If necessary plugin the AC adapter to a power strip and connect the other end to the external hard drive.
4. If there is an ON/OFF switch make sure it’s set to the ON position.
5. You may now hear your computer make some “found new device” sounds and you’ll see some balloon popups saying that your computer is installing a new device.
6. After the balloon messages go away (about 30-60 seconds) open your “My Computer” in Windows XP or “Computer” in Windows Vista and you should see your external hard drive. It’s most likely labeled D:\ or E:\ but can be any drive letter.

How to backup files and folders to your external USB hard drive:

1. Now it’s time to perform our first backup. Please keep in mind that there are many ways to backup data to your external hard drive and I’m going to show you one of the easiest ones.
2. Right Click any file or folder and select “Send To”, then choose your external hard drive. Windows will now copy that file or folder to your external hard drive.
3. Simple huh! Just remember to backup your important files and folders often. If you’re asked to overwrite backed up files and folders just say yes or “copy and replace”.

Pros:

* You can backup lots and lots of files.
* External hard drives are portable.
* Very easy to install and use.
* 1 time fee.

Cons:

* It’s not automatic.
* Prone to hard drive failure…it’s just a hard drive after all.
* Often infected by USB worms if you “pass it around”.
* Susceptible to fire, flood, theft and damage.

Backup Your Computer To Online Storage

Backing up your computer online is the latest (and greatest) form of personal backup. Let’s go over all the pros and cons first.

Pros:

* Automatic Backups ensure you’ll never have to remember to do that backup. Everytime you add a new file to your computer, Carbonite (my online backup software), will immediately back it up.
* All files are encrypted. Only you can access, download and read your files.
* Unlimited space. Backup as much as you want!

How to get started with Carbonite Online Backup:

1. Go to Carbonite.com.
2. Look over to the right and you’ll see “Start Your Risk-Free Trial”.
3. Enter your email address and any password you’d like to use (twice).
4. Click “Start Your Free Trial”.
5. Enter how you heard about Carbonite.
6. Click the “Install Now” Button.
7. Click Run.
8. Click Run again.
9. Click the OK button to refresh your desktop.
10. Click Next on the Welcome To Carbonite window.
11. Click Next again to have Carbonite backup your documents folder (this folder contains documents, pictures, music and videos) and desktop.
12. Click Next 2 more times and then click the done button.
13. Now you’ll notice a little yellow lock in your system tray. The yellow lock indicates that Carbonite is backing up your “My documents” folder and Desktop. Once the backup is complete that lock will turn green.

External hard drives are the perfect medium to store your backup data.

For those of you who have come to your senses and realize just how important a regular backup of your data really is, I congratulate you. Now we can begin our discussion of external hard drives.

An external hard drive is a hard disk drive which resides outside (external) of your computer case and connects to your PC through a USB, Firewire, or eSATA cable. The external drive provides an excellent solution for people who want to backup their computer files, photos, and music. Most are easy to use and installation is just a matter of plugging a cable into your desktop PC. An external drive can also provide you with much more available disk space if you happen to fill up your internal hard drive.

So how do I choose which one is best for me?

As you might expect, there are many brands and models to choose from. Some of the more well known brands are Western Digital, LaCie, Maxtor, Seagate, and Iomega. They all offer choices that differ primarily by storage capacity and speed.

Let’s begin with storage capacity. How large a drive should you get? External drive capacity is typically listed in Gigabytes (a Gigabyte is a billion bytes or a thousand megabytes, which is about 1½ CDROM discs).

When selecting an external hard disk, you should decide what you will be using the drive for, and about how much data you will be placing on the drive. An easy way to get a ballpark number of how large your current data folder is would be to, for example, create a folder for your photos. You would then cut and paste all of your photos into this folder. Now, to determine how large this folder is, simply right-click on the folder with your mouse and choose Properties from the resulting menu. The General tab of the Properties window will then tell you how large the folder is. Do this again for your music and other files and then add up all the folder sizes to get the total size. Once you have a final total, multiply that number by 3. That will give you an estimate of the minimum size that your external drive should be. For example, say your folders add up to about 50 Gigabytes (50GB) of data. Multiplying 50 X 3 would equal 150GB. This would be your minimum size external drive. You always want to allow room for future storage needs. If you can afford a larger drive, get it. You won’t be sorry.

The three most widely used types of removable hard disk interfaces are – USB, Firewire, and eSATA. An interface is just computer lingo for connection type.

With the advent of USB, the most common standard, external hard disks have become widely available and relatively inexpensive. Desktop models usually require a power source whereas most of the portable models get their power from the USB port. Currently, USB 2.0 speed is about 480 megabits per second. However, USB transfer rates are greatly affected by other devices and applications that are running at the same time as your file transfer, diminishing performance. USB 3.0 products are expected to arrive in 2009 or 2010. USB 3.0 is expected to be 10 times faster than USB 2.0, up to 4.8 gigabits per second. The main advantages of USB up to this point has been ease of use and relative low cost.

Conversely, Firewire is more like a direct connection to the external disk drive, and will copy files much quicker than USB. Firewire is Apple Inc.’s name for the IEEE 1394 High Speed Serial Bus. It is preferred over the more common USB for its greater effective speed and power distribution capabilities, and because it does not need a computer host. The current Firewire 800 (nearly 800 Megabits/sec transfer rates) is soon to be replaced by S1600 and S3200 — which enable data transmission rates up to 1.6 Gigabits/sec and 3.2 Gigabits/sec respectively. That would make Firewire theoretically four times faster than is currently possible.

eSATA which stands for “external” Serial Advanced Technology Attachment, communicate over a high-speed serial cable. This is a relatively new option for external drives since USB 2.0 and Firewire connected drives have been around for some time now. The main advantage of the eSATA technology is speed, some 4-6 times faster than existing USB 2.0 and Firewire transfer speeds. You’ll soon be seeing more and more products offering eSATA as an option. Most external hard drives will soon be capable of all three interfaces- but some are only capable of either USB or Firewire. Something to keep in mind when you are selecting an external hard drive.

So how do I decide?

All three technologies will get the job done. Your decision will come down to cost and ease of use. If you are on a limited budget, USB will likely be the best choice, whereas if speed is what is important to you, and you are willing to pay for it, Firewire or eSATA will work best.

Whatever you choose, backing up your computer files is now easier than ever. There is really no excuse now, so do it!

USB 1.0 and 1.1
The USB 1.0 specification was introduced in 1994 with two data rates, Low-Speed (1.5 Mbps) and Full-Speed (12 Mbps). It was designed to replace the myriad of connectors at the back of PCs and simplify software configuration of communication devices. The USB 1.1 specification was released in 1998 and was the earliest revision to be widely adopted.

USB 2.0
The USB 2.0 specification was released in 2000 and was standardized by the USB-IF in 2001. Several companies led the initiative to develop a higher data transfer rate of 480 Mbps, about 40 times faster than the USB 1.1 specification. Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) expanded the range of external devices that could be used on a computer. And, offered backward compatibility with previous generations of USB.

USB On-The-Go
Many USB devices are portable, and there is an increasing need for devices to communicate directly with each other without a computer. The USB On-The-Go Supplement makes it possible for peripherals to communicate directly with each other. USB On-The-Go features include:
- Limited host capability to communicate with selected USB peripherals
- A small USB connector appropriate for the mobile form
- Low power requirements for preserving battery life
- Ability to be either host or peripheral and to dynamically switch between the two.

Wireless USB
Wireless USB is a short-range, high-bandwidth wireless radio communication technology originally developed by the Wireless USB Promoter Group and subsequently managed by the USB-IF. Designed from the ground up to address challenges of wireless communications and personal networking, Wireless USB combines the speed and security of wired technology and the ease-of-use of wireless technology. Wireless USB can be used in devices including game controllers, printers, scanners, digital cameras, digital music players, hard disks and flash drives. It can also transfer parallel video streams.

It is capable of sending date at a rate up to 480 Mbps at a 3 meter distance and up to 110 Mbps up to 10 meters. It was designed for the 3.1 to 10.6 GHz frequency range. The Wireless USB architecture allows up to 127 devices to connect directly to a host. With the elimination of wires, a hub is not needed. An upcoming Wireless USB 1.1 specification will increase data transfer speed to 1.0 Gbps per second.

USB 3.0
In November 2008, the USB 3.0 Promoter Group announced the completion of the USB 3.0 specification. It delivers transfer rates up to 10 times faster than Hi-Speed USB (USB 2.0) through the utilization of a 5.0 Gbps data rate. Additionally, it has optimized power efficiency, sync-n-go technology that minimizes user wait-time and backward compatibility with USB 2.0. SuperSpeed USB devices interoperate with USB 2.0 platforms and SuperSpeed USB hosts support Hi-Speed USB legacy devices.

NEC Electronics recently announced the first USB 3.0 host controller (part number PD720200). With its high-speed data transfer capability, the new SuperSpeed host controller will require only 70 seconds to transfer 25 GB of HD video content, the equivalent of a Blu-Ray disc. Transferring the same content would take upwards of 14 minutes with Hi-Speed USB.

USB connectors are designed for ease-of-use. Generally, the trident logo on the connector should be facing up when plugging into a port. The connectors are designed to be durable and easy to insert/remove. Different types of connectors server different functions.
