An HTTP proxy is a type of proxy server known as an open proxy. Proxy servers generally allow users of a computer network to both store and forward information and services on the Internet. This reduces the load on the network’s bandwidth and allows a method of control to be set on network activity. With an open proxy, anyone may use this type of forwarding service and gain anonymity online.

Countering the Odds and Using the Advantages of HTTP Proxy Servers

HTTP proxy servers allow users to hide their identity while making use of online services available. Identity theft, information manipulation, fraud, and the like are ever increasing in today’s connected world. Many businesses and home users have been quite successful at staving assaults made by malicious software and other online threats.

With all these threats, any individual’s right to privacy is now more assaulted than ever. It is interesting that even this basic right is brought under the examining lens of the very company one works in. It is no secret that employers may monitor their employees’ browsing activities, emails, and instant messenger communication. This is often done with the thought that the law will typically favor the employer and not the employee.

HTTP proxy servers are used to hide or disguise a user’s identity through hiding their IP address. Every computer (or any other device that can go online for that matter) that connects to the Internet will be assigned a unique number. That number enables both identification and data communication while it is online.

Ill-meaning and spurious individuals track a user’s activities using that user’s unique IP address. A lot of critical information, including a user’s browsing habits, can be tracked using this information. In effect, these people can steal your identity and use it to further their own ends.

Many users have turned to HTTP proxy servers to provide anonymity and identity protection. These proxy servers conceal your IP address from the service you access. This basically means an increased protection from fraud and identity theft. Another thing that you can do with these proxy servers is to circumvent Internet censorship. To locate these servers one only has to look up proxy lists that provide them online.

Disadvantages and Dangers of HTTP Proxy Surfing

For all the anonymity and identity protection you’re getting from using these proxy servers, there is also a certain danger to their use. These servers are not always secure and it may turn out to be a threat to your own privacy as well. Some of these servers are left open either through negligence or malicious intent.

Users would have to weigh the advantages against the disadvantages of HTTP proxy surfing. You might end up exposing yourself to the very online dangers you were trying to avoid.

Peter Garant has written many articles about Internet Proxies for a recently launched website about Proxies. Visit The Good and the Bad of HTTP Proxy Surfing.

Today I finally got a chance to review the Nokia’s Flagship Phone – The Nokia N96 16GB.

The first thing that I noticed with this phone is the smoothness of its front surface. The buttons are embedded giving it a clean and glossy look. Even the video conference camera is hardly noticeable at first glance.

It is noticeably taller and wider than its successful predecessor, the N95. But the thickness and weight has been significantly reduced making it convenient to carry around and place inside your front pocket.

The 2.8” QVGA with 16 million colors is one of the best cell phone screens I have ever seen in the Nokia N-series line. The colors and images are very vivid and the picture quality makes the user interface comes to life. This phone is definitely designed for rich multi-media viewing pleasures.

Watching movies on a mobile phone has never been this good. As soon as I slide the D-pad up, the screen rotated to a landscape mode giving me a full-widescreen display. The dedicated media buttons are conveniently placed on the left side of the D-Pad and illuminate with a white glow as you touch it. The small flip-stand situated the camera lens is well located and perfectly angled when placing the phone on top of my desk while watching broadcast TV or listening to internet radio.

The 5 Megapixel Carl Zeiss optic camera with dual flash LED makes a direct statement that the N-series still holds its ground when it comes to digital photography. The N96 is obviously one of the best camera phones in the industry.

The enormous16GB storage capacity guarantees that it can easily accommodate huge collections of pictures, music albums, movies, television shows, N-Gage games, and hundreds of applications. And if it is still not enough, you can still upgrade up to 24GB!

Being a Quad-Band phone with 3G, EGPRS, EDGE, and WiFi support, voice and data communication will never be a problem anywhere you go. The built-in GPS navigation with turn-by-turn directional system makes it a perfect companion for travelers and drivers. The Nokia Maps are very clear and with the N96 highspeed connection, you can quickly search and download information about points of interests like hotels, restaurants, airports, etc.

Overall, the Nokia N96 is a very powerful communication and entertainment gadget that comes in a very modernly sleek package.

W3C Validation is an oft-repeated term when website accessibility is talked about. W3C refers to World Wide Web Consortium, a unanimous organization that provides a ser of web standards and guidelines that help overcome the problem of incompatibility of code and browsers and help make websites accessible to a large population across the world.

The standards specified by the W3C are only guidelines and not legal specifications. To follow or not to follow them is on the discretion of web designers and developers. However, professional web designers and developers choose to adhere to the guidelines in order to increase the credibility of their work. The W3C is a reputed organization and enjoys high regards in the World Wide Web. In fact, many clients seek to get websites that are W3C validated. It is common for XHTML and HTML website but becomes indispensable for website build totally on CSS.

The World Wide Web Consortium was the creation of Tim Berners-Lee, the developer of the first ever web browser in 1989. The W3C was incepted in a bid to standardize the web technologies used in the web world and promote the Internet as a global medium. There are millions of desktops in the world, all with different specifications. This interoperability between the different machines needs a standard interface and standardized data communication protocols in order to transfer the information to and fro.

W3C Mission
The World Wide Web consortium works with a mission to standardize the web so it can be used efficiently across the world. It aims to publish necessary standards that can be followed by all computer system so that they can speak the same language and communicate effortlessly and so that all web browsers render web pages exactly the same way. The consortium also seeks to educate web designers and web developers about the nuances of the web so that they can work together to build websites that comply with the W3C standards.

The consortium ensures that users all over the world using any machine, be it Windows or Mac are able to able to view web pages hosted on servers irrespective of the location. Web pages that are created with validated HTML and CSS code are rendered the same way and have the same functionality across different web browsers and operating systems.

Importance of W3C Validated Code
W3C validation ensure cross browser compatibility to a certain extent. All web browsers render HTML differently. And because browsers have their own specific proprietary extensions to HTML and CSS, the website which looks great on one particular browser fails to look the same in others. By using code that is validated as per W3C standards, you can be sure that your website works well on all popular browsers.

Why is W3C Standards Not Widely Used?
HTML editors do not generate code that is 100% compatible. The code that is generated fails to meet the latest standards. Amongst the ones that do a good job are DreamWeaver.

Even hand coding cannot ensure complete compatibility with the standards unless of course, the developer is highly well-versed with the latest standards. Moreover, a lot of fancy features are not supported by web browsers.

Adherence to web standards is absolutely essential, especially so in the times of increasing number of web browsers that are coming up. Thus make sure your code follows W3C validation in order for your website to perform well on the World Wide Web.

I have often wondered what would happen to large corporate companies if they were to suddenly come across an incident whereby the building sustains a lot of damage meaning that all client data are lost and all of the expensive computing equipment are damaged. In instances whereby problems occur which are beyond the control of the staff or the company, there must always be a backup plan. In certain areas where there are natural disasters it goes without saying that this then is an imperative step for the companies located there to make.

Many companies and businesses will have heard of data centres and will be familiar with what they are used for. A data centre is quite literally a facility for holding data, computers, telecommunication equipment and storage systems. These can contain back-up power supplies, fire suppression, air conditioning for keeping the servers cool, environmental control and data communication. These fast became popular in use after the dotcom bubble. Companies became dependant on fast internet connectivity and continuous operation of the deployment of systems.

Some of the smaller companies began building their own facilities called Internet Data Centres (IDC) which helped with finding solutions for systems operation and deployment. Due to the positive practical results, these were soon migrated towards private centres.

The data centres hold the information through their own server machines. These run on a twenty four hour basis, therefore the quality of the server machines and its maintenance is essential for ensuring no problems occur within the machines, so as to hold all the information. The centres are also highly secured, which means that even staff members are made to go through a security procedure before entering into the building.

Data centres can take up a whole floor of a building, a room space or an entire building. Larger companies may have their own data centre facility, whereas other companies may have their own room in the same building. The centres can also act as a back-up power, security software information and security application. When it comes to data centres, those who are familiar with this term will know that this means holding masses of information in one building.

An example of a large company with a data centre is a bank. Practically all financial establishments have their own centre, which hold vital information about clients account details on the mainframe (large computers built to operate and perform complex applications). The mainframes are usually designed to run with minimal or no disruptions, which is why they are useful for a data centre. Another example are universities, which holds not only student information, but also building information, past building projects, intellectual history and planned construction projects.

A data centre is simply the backbone of a company, which can hold back up information about vital data information. Therefore they also contain mirror drives and back-up computers, which can also run on battery power should there be any interruptions in the electrical power.

Mobile phones or cell phones are wireless portable, short range electronic devices used for mobile voice data communication. The communication is carried over a cell sites. Mobile phones support services like messaging, e-mail, gaming, Bluetooth, infra-red to name only a few.

Way back in 1915, the American company AT&T contemplated the use of wireless phones. This idea was soon shelved as the company feared that its control on wired service would end. Cell phones in 1996 ushered in a new age of mobile telephony. Mobile sets could now be connected to the internet and wireless e-mail. A new generation of Smart phones was born. The mobile phones are designed with latest technology which has turned as pocket PC.

Mobile phones can transmit and receive from a number of cell sites or base stations which are fitted with the help of special antennas. These sites are normally built on a tower. Mobiles transmit voice and data to the nearest cell site with the help of a low powered transceiver. The mobile number will be registered with the mobile telephone exchange.

The sites have low powered transmitters (1 or 2 watts) and can relay between the mobile phones and the main switch. The switch helps to connect the call to another caller of the same wireless service provider or to the public telephone network. This dialogue that ensues is a flow of data which is digital and digitized audio.

There are several categories of mobile phones from basic phones to feature phones such as music phones, camera phones and smart phones. Technological advances have led to miniaturization and increased processing power of microchips. Even more features have been added to these mobiles. A high-end Smart phone five years ago is a standard phone today.

Mobile phones have features that go far beyond text-messaging and voice calls. They include internet browsing, music (MP3) playback, memo recording, personal organizer functions, e-mail, built-in-cameras, Push-to-Talk, infra red and Bluetooth connectivity. It is envisaged that in future, they will also be able to serve as consoles to online high quality games!

The utility values of mobile phones are increasing in their scope and variety. In 1999, the first mobile internet service i-Mode was launched. Of late, mobile telephones have been used by public activists and journalists. Mobile phones have added a new dimension to news -gathering. Many companies have begun to offer mobile career guidance services. There are tools for creating websites on mobile phones Banking and commerce are increasingly conducted on mobile phones in many parts of the world.

The sale of ring tones to mobiles phone companies brought a new dimension to the mobile phone industry. It is also called the seventh of the Mass Media with Print, recording, cinema, radio, TV and the internet preceding it. Mobile phones have made a great revolution in the recent years, with the advent of new technologies.

Law enforcement agencies use the triangulation method to trace mobile signals to the hide-outs of the most “wanted” people. In developing countries, in the last decade, mobiles have become pervasive tools of communication. Truly, mobile phones have only begun to re-define the concept of connectivity in the world.
