Just what is gravity? An apple falls from a tree. Things that we throw up will inevitably fall back to earth, now matter how strong we are or how hard we throw them. Gravity is a mysterious thing that captures the imaginations of those both young and old.
For a long time, humanity had a very simplistic understanding of gravity, and our knowledge was very little. Our outlook on gravity was almost philosophical. We believed that things fell to the ground because it was the natural state of those things. The natural state of a thing was to be on the ground, and so no matter how hard you threw it, it would come back to earth. This view prevailed for centuries.
Sir Issac Newton then came along. He realized that gravity was not simply the reaction of a body returning to its natural state. Instead, he came to the conclusion that most of the gravity we feel is due to the Earth, a body of immense mass, pulling us in. He hypothesized that all bodies with mass are attracted to one another, and came up with equations to explain how that all worked.
The amazing thing is that Issac Newton was right. He showed how the forces of gravity interact between the sun and planets as well as the moon, creating their orbits. He did an amazing thing for science and our understanding of gravity leapt light years ahead of where it once was.
Our understanding of gravity then remained the same for several more centuries, until one aspiring young patents clerk began pondering the nature of light and time. His name was Albert Einstein, and you may have heard of his theory of Relativity.
Einstein discovered or theorized that gravity was due to the mass of large bodies causing space itself to become bent or distorted. He called this fabric that was bent space-time. He added in time as a fourth dimension, more similar to space than we had ever imagined.
A new theory however was on the horizon, that of Quantum Mechanics. Quantum Mechanics was based around probability and chance – the mathematics that dictate the scale of the very small. Einstein hated Quantum Mechanics. The problem is, Quantum Mechanics describes the very small very well as far as we know it, but in this mathematics of the very small there is nowhere for gravity.
We still have no idea how gravity affects small particles or how it operates on scales of the very small. One promising theory we have come up with today is that there is a particle called the Higgs Boson, which has also been referred to as The God Particle. This Higgs Boson would interact with particles that have mass, then fly through a zone called the Higgs Field to interact with other particles that can be any distance away, transferring the force of gravity. So whether the West copied the game from the Chinese or not, the Egyptians were before everyone! It seems Dominoes Games was the pastime of Kings, long before either the West or the Chinese even thought about it. But the Egyptians were a civilisation based on mathematical equations, so it only seems right that they were, so obviously, first! Over the centuries many varieties of the game, and the sets, have evolved.. All around the world. Yet the facts do seem to indicate, Dominoes Sets, as known in the Western world, were a Chinese Invention. But the plot still continues to thicken!
Forgetting about Tutankhamen, and the West’s Double Six Dominoes. Let’s concentrate on Chinese Dominoes Games for a moment, and their development.. Chinese Sets are a little different. Dice were introduced into China from India, many centuries ago. Original Chinese Domino Tiles are believed to be derived from them. The way a computer deals with time is totally different to the ways humans perceive it. We arrange time into seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years, while computers on the other hand arrange time as a single number representing the seconds that have passed from a single point in time, known as the prime epoch.
Most computers use NTP (Network Time Protocol) to deal with time and on networks many are synchronised using a dedicated NTP time server. NTP knows nothing about days, years or centuries, only the seconds from the prime epoch. This prime epoch is set (for most systems) at midnight at the turn of the century twentieth century that for a human would be recorded as something like: 00:00 – 01,01,1900.
Computers, however, count time as the number of seconds past this point. If a computer was around in 1900 its timestamp on midnight January 1 would be 0 while in 1972 at the same date the timestamp would be 2,272,060,800, which represents the number of seconds since 1900.
The timestamps restart every 136 years with the next wrap around due in 2036, this has caused uneasiness amongst some who fear a Millennium Bug type scenario, although most doubt such events would occur, however, when a wrap-around of the timestamp does happen an era integer will be added (+1), to allow computers to deal with time spans that cover more than one wrap-around. If computers and NTP need to deal with time that spans before the prime epoch a negative integer is used (for the year 1500 a -3 will be used to represent three cycles of 136 years).
Timestamps are used in virtually every transaction that modern computers are tasked to do such as sending emails, debugging and programming. Because time is linear, a computer knows that each timestamp is always greater than the previous one and therefore computers and NTP find it difficult to deal with inaccuracies in time, particularly when time suddenly appears to go backwards.
This can happen if computers are not synchronised to the same time. If an email is sent to a machine with a slower clock, it appears to the computer to have been received before it has been sent. Lack of synchronisation can serious problems and can even leave a system vulnerable to malicious attacks and even fraud.
Because of this, most computer networks are synchronised to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). UTC is a global timescale and the same for everybody worldwide it is based on the time told by atomic clocks which are highly accurate, neither gaining nor losing a second in millions of years.
Most computer networks use a dedicated NTP time server to receive a UTC time to synchronise their computers too. UTC is available from across the Internet (although unsecured), via the GPS network (Global Positioning System), or by receiving national time and frequency broadcasts via long wave.
NTP synchronises a computer by checking the received UTC time and adding to or holding a computer’s timestamp until it perfectly matches UTC. By using a dedicated NTP time server UTC can be maintained on a network to a few milliseconds of UTC time.

Take something from where it is plentiful and sell it somewhere where it is scarce. This has been the way of making money for centuries and as a stroll around any container port will quickly show, it’s still with us. It is however, far from the only game in town as far as the world economy is concerned.
These days it is increasingly the case that something more intangible, namely knowledge, is being bought and sold. At the risk of oversimplification we could say that the path towards wider access to knowledge went something like this: Oral transmission, written transmission, printed transmission, auditory electronic transmission and audiovisual electronic transmission. While each of these contributed greatly to the dissemination of knowledge they all had severe limitations. In the case of the first two the main problem was reach. There are only so many people that one individual could speak or write to. In the case of the last three the problem was one of access. Access to printed and electronic media has traditionally been the preserve of rich, influential and powerful people who used ‘gatekeepers’ to determine exactly what could be printed, published and broadcasted. This is all changing due to yet another technological revolution: the rise of the internet.
Thanks to the internet ‘democratisation of knowledge’ is in full effect, and now just one person can reach out to far more people and make themselves heard. This means that the trade in knowledge can finally move beyond the constraints (reach and access) mentioned above. With a few basic pieces of equipment it is now just as easy to communicate with someone on the other side of the world as with someone on the other side of your city.
This brings me back to my basic definition of trade (selling plentiful commodities in scarce environments): Take something from where it is plentiful and sell it where it is scarce. Unlike the past, we now have the ability to do this with knowledge. Allow me to personalise this for a moment: It is now possible to take knowledge from where it is plentiful (i.e. your head or even your hard drive!) and connect it with the people that need it most. This can be done without having to write books thick as doorstops or having to gain access to as many television studios as possible.
Economists refer to the ‘Knowledge Economy’ as a way of describing the economic model that is emerging through the trade of knowledge. I want to encourage you to think deeply about the implications of the Knowledge Economy for you personally since it is indeed possible to translate it from just another ‘high faluting’ theory into something that can make a real difference to your own life. Consider for a moment the amount of knowledge and experience that you have built up over your lifetime and how this can benefit people who are still starting out along the roads that you have already travelled. It is quite likely that such people would be willing to pay good money to ‘tap your brain’. It is now possible for you to make this happen, allowing you to benefit handsomely from the process. How is this possible? Simple: Use the internet to help people by selling them your own knowledge!
It used to be said that ‘Knowledge is Power’ and this is still the case. However the rise of the Knowledge Economy means that you can benefit from a life of learning to such an extent that it may become possible for you to rephrase this maxim into: Knowledge is wealth!
