Phones equipped with GPS receivers are revolutionizing the cell phone industry. As we`ve all seen on our favorite crime dramas, if your cell phone is on, the police can locate you, sort of anyway! For those phones without a GPS receiver, the technology is not as accurate, in police drama terms you`re probably a goner if you`re locked in someone`s trunk. A cell is basically a two-way radio that pings signals off of land-based towers which are arranged into a network of cells to send and receive signals. Many things can get in the way of the police finding you, like your signal being lost in a copse of pine trees or by pinging into a mountainside.

On the other hand, if your new cell is equipped with a GPS receiver, odds of surviving are infinitely better. GPS technology does not rely on land based signal transfer. GPS relies on satellite signals which translates into much less that can get in the way of your cell signal, which means you get found faster! GPS means more accurate location tracking and the ability to give turn-by-turn directions upon request to the cell user.

Now, all of this technology is a wonderful thing if it is working for you, but let`s look at three scenarios where you might not be as happy about being found:

Evaluation of Traffic Data Obtained via GPS enabled Mobile Phones – A study was done using 100 vehicles on a 10 mile stretch of road that did the loop-de-loop continuously for 10 hours in the name of traffic studies. Each of the drivers was equipped with a GPS enabled Nokia N98. (They were definitely not talking on the cells however, that would be bad!) Anyway, these phones were left on and data was gathered by picking up geographical markers along the way. This allowed researchers to study the viability of gathering the location of cars in real time and simultaneously broadcasting traffic flows, other more costly and inefficient means of tracking traffic snafus.

The practical applications are wonderful. No more dangerous chopper-in-the sky reports on the morning news … newscasters would just follow our cell pings and report back exactly where the traffic jams lie in real time. The down side? Officials were quick to point out that everyone`s privacy was guarded while doing these studies, but they felt it necessary to point this out.

GPS Phones Help Monitor Staff – Part of the American dream is that each one of us has the ability to start and grow our businesses, even if we are in head-to-head competition with businesses in our niche and 30 million times our size, right? Do you know how we can compete with GPS technology and not pay a mint? If you are a small package delivery company competing with the big boys, instead of installing GPS tracking devices on every package, you (generously) give each of your 30 drivers a GPS enabled cell. You then ask your in-house tech to build a custom application that uses the phones GPS technology to locate your drivers and therefore, your packages thus increasing your efficiency by cutting down on stops for fast food and fast women between package deliveries.

GPS People Tracking – At the end of 2005, it was mandated that each and every cell be configured to track the user within 100 meters when a 911 call was initiated. We are now, back to being locked in a trunk, clock ticking and our favorite police detectives hot on our trail. This time you pray that your cell is new enough to transmit what the police need to find you! What? You`re not sure if it is so equipped?

One final observation: If you do not mind everyone knowing where you are, keep your phone on. Locked in a trunk scenario, definitely turn your cell ON. Making inadvisable stops during work hours? Just turn off your phone, dude!

The phenomenon of electromagnetic induction was first discovered by Michael Faraday in 1831, and it is evident that he realised at least a part of its future potential in the modern world. A contemporary politician asked him about the usefulness of the discovery; he answered ‘at present I do not know, but one day you will be able to put a tax on it.’

The earliest record of using electromagnetic technology to locate buried cables dates from around 1910. More portable locators were made over the next years and the Sharman Main Finder was just one example. The user instructions give a tinge of envy to anyone trying to trace gas pipes .. ..’just clip the generator to a gas bracket in the nearest house or onto a street lamp.’

American and German schools of design emerged during the years leading up to the Second World War. In North America roads were wide and wide cables hung on poles so the main requirement for a locator was to locate widely spaced buried pipes. The result was a simple, high frequency, low power and low cost locator.

In Germany, cables as well as pipes were buried under narrow streets, so elaborate low frequency and high power locators were developed that required considerable expertise to obtain satisfactory results.

Dr Gerhard Fisher of California designed the Metallascope, the first high performance buried pipe and cable locating set. His system made use of the latest scientific developments and his company exists today and still produces the M-scope, an up-to-date descendent of the original Metallascope.

One of the engineering sections of Bell Laboratories studied the problem of accurate location of newly buried cables and recognised that an antenna with twin sensing aerials would give more positive plan definition, and also measure the depth of a target cable. The subsequent design, called the Depthometer, was engineered and manufactured in 1964. It was another 12 years before the first commercial twin aerial antenna locator was made by the Electrolocation company in Bristol England.

The twin aerial system was found to have substantial advantages over single aerial locators. Twin sensing aerials combined the seemingly contradictory qualities of discrimination with sensitivity. For the first time it was possible to locate buried cables below an overhead power line and to sort out crowded utility services under a city street intersection.

The introduction of the twin aerial antenna coupled with miniaturised electronic circuitry coincided with a programme of extending and upgrading utility distribution systems. This growing demand and technical progress resulted in a series of advances and new features to make locating more certain and more simple. Some of these advances included:

” Combination of active and passive signal reception
” Multi-frequency locating sets enabling the user to select the most suitable frequency for each application
” Electronic depth measurement.
” Current measurement along the length of a pipe or cable to detect coating or insulation defects.
” Current direction recognition to verify the identity of a target line.
” Permanently installed signal transmitters to apply a signal tone to a telephone cable over distances up to 150km/100 miles.

Today, electromagnetic locators are the worldwide standard for locating buried pipes and cables. A number of specialised manufacturers offer a choice of locators ranging from simple equipment used to detect the presence of buried cables to sophisticated instruments for pinpointing, identifying and fault finding buried pipes and cables in the most complex situations.

Written by Select Surveys, one of the UK’s leading independent surveying companies specialising in using electromagnetic, CAT and ground penetrating radar equipment to detect underground cables and utilities.

A sound GPS system not only gives a precise location on earth, rather it allows the user to save money by saving petrol. Therefore those who rely on this system when they are driving would not only cut down on their petrol/gas, but they would also not have to go through the trouble of asking for directions from any Tom, Dick and Harry or stopping at a petrol pump for immediate directions.

GPS Navigation systems enable you to keep a track of your destination without the risk of getting lost in the puzzling maze of natural and man-made systems. So take the shortest route to your destination and save money on every mile that you take which would eventually result in saving a lot of miles. The GPS tracking system will make you the king of roads as its technology is integrated with a map program, which gives a calculated depiction of the place to be reached. The GPS navigation system is highly popular amongst pilots and cab drivers etc. There are umpteen number of GPS which are available in the market. For instance the Go One GPS navigation system, Bluetooth GPS receiver, nextar GPS navigation system, Gamin nuvi 880 navigation syst3em. The last one is an advanced system, which is voice activated and is empowered with speech recognition capabilities. As technology is advancing with every passing day, one can find new innovations being applied to the GPS navigation system. Some of the new trends include a callerID and a GPS receiver in a mobile phone. Moreover, integrated with transmitters the system is capable of tracing any property which has been stolen. Thus the GPS system is being used on air, roads and water. Thus this gift of technology is helping millions of people from all around the world and travellers, as people who enjoy excursions would find this device as an apple of their eye.
