Burglary and Fireproof Safes for Your Home or Business

If you have valuables that need to be stored in a safe, make sure you choose a model that is burglary rated and fireproof. This article briefly discusses some of the available fireproof safe models that carry both types of ratings. We’ll look at models from Cobalt Safes and Fire King Safes.

The fireproof rating of a safe is usually expressed in minutes or hours, and gives an indication of how well the safe would protect it’s contents during a fire. An example rating would be a 2 hour fireproof rating. This means that the fireproof safe has been subjected to a 1700 degree F fire for a period of 2 hours, and the temperature inside the safe did not rise above 350 degree F. This is a low enough temperature to protect documents and other durable valuables such as jewelry from permanent damage.

The burglary rating, usually expressed in minutes, gives an indication of how difficult the safe is to break into. For example, a 15 minute burglary rating means that it took an experienced locksmith 15 minutes to gain access to the safe using common locksmithing tools.

The Cobalt Model SB-01C is a 1.0 cubic foot model with a 2 hour fireproof rating, a glass relocker and is burglary rated. It can be ordered with a combination dial lock or a convenient electronic keypad lock. This fireproof safe features a tri-spoke handle and massive chrome plate steel and stationary bolts. The Cobalt SB series also comes with a lifetime fireproof warranty.

The Cobalt SB-02C model has a 2.19 cubic foot capacity and also carries a 2 hour fireproof rating. It also features a remote glass relocker, heavy-duty ball bearing hinges and 1 adjustable shelf. This fireproof safe is available with a combination dial lock (S & G Group II) or an easy to use electronic keypad lock.

For even more storage capacity, the Cobalt SB-03C fireproof safe features 3.43 feet of storage, 2 adjustable shelves, a 2 hour fireproof rating and is burglary rated. It also features a remote glass relocker, a tri-spoke handle and heavy duty ball bearing hinges. It is available with either a mechanical combination dial or an electronic keypad locking mechansim.

FireKing also produces fireproof safes with impact ratings. Impact ratings ensure that the safe’s contents are not damaged during a fire when the roof or walls collapse on the safe. The Fire King Model KV714 features a 1.6 cubic foot storage capacity, an electronic keypad lock, an automatic relocker, 3 way bolt work and 1 adjustable shelf.

The FireKing model KV2015 features a UL Class 350 fireproof and impact rating, an electronic digital lock, 3 way boltwork, automatic re-locking and 2 adjustable shelves. This fireproof safe also features heavy duty hinges for smooth operation and an integrated door hardplate.

Choosing the Right Fire Safes for Your Home or Business

Fire safes are designed to protect their contents from damage during a fire. There are several factors to consider when choosing fire safes, with the fireproof rating assigned to the safe being the most important.

The fireproof rating gives and indication of how well the fire safes will protect the contents from damage under actual fire conditions. The rating is usually expressed in minutes or hours. For example, a 1 hour 350 degree F rating means that the fire safes have been exposed to a 1700 degree F fire for a period of 1 hour, and that the temperature inside the safes did not rise above 350 degrees F. The 350 degree F number is a low enough temperature to protect documents and other fairly durable items from permanent damage.

If you need to protect more delicate valuables or electronic backup media, there are fire safes available that have a special media rating. A media rating is determined in the same manner as a regular fireproof rating, except that the temperature inside the fire safes must not rise above 125 degrees F. In addition, since electronic backup media is subject to damage due to water, a media rating indicates that the humidity inside the fire safes will not rise above 80% during fire conditions. The test includes using water to put out the fire.

Another factor to consider when choosing fire safes is the burglary rating. Not all fire safes are burglary rated. The burglary rating gives an indication of how long it would take to break into the safe. Usually specified in minutes, the burglary rating for fire safes gives the amount of time that it would take an experienced locksmith to break into the safe using common locksmith’s tools. The higher the burglary rating, the more secure the fire safe.

There are a number of other factors to consider when choosing fire safes. One factor is the locking mechanism that is used to lock the safe. Available types of locks include traditional mechanical combination dials, mechanical keylocks, electronic keypad locks, and biometric locks. The electronic keypad type of locking mechanism is much more convenient than the mechanical dial or keylock type. With an electronic keypad lock, the user simply enters the combination to the safe on a PIN pad, similar to the ones used on ATM and debit machines. This causes the lock to release on the safe. Consider fire safes with a biometric lock for even more security and convenience. A biometric lock uses a fingerprint scanner to grant access to the safe. The user simply places their index finger on the scanner, and the safe opens if the fingerprint is a match.

Fire safes that use electronic locks usually allow several different users to be given access to the safe. This feature usually comes with the ability to view an audit trail, showing who accessed the safe and at what times. This data is usually viewed on a built-in display panel or uploaded to a personal computer for viewing.

As you can see, there are a number of factors to consider when choosing fire safes. To ensure that you make the right choice, choose and experienced safe and vault company to do business with. They can help you select the right safe for you from among a wide variety of fire safes.

What Type of Safes are Available without Getting a Really Big One?

Often when I think of a safe, I think of a large, rectangular, reinforced metal “box” for placing valuable or firearms. Though these large types of safes are available, and there is a very good reason to have one, they are not the only options out there for protecting your valuables. We do not have any firearms in our house, so we do not need large. But we do have some valuables and important documents that we would like to keep safe, especially in case of a fire. After doing a bit of research, I decided that I really like Sentry safes, so I took a look to see what they offered, and was impressed with the large range of different types of Sentry safes.

One nifty type of safe is the in-floor safe. It is a cylinder tube that is about 15” high that is installed in the floor of your house. With the top flush with the floor, the safe is easily concealed under a rug. It comes with a combination lock and contoured handle. It says that it is easy to install in wood or concrete floors, and can be used in new or existing homes. It is not very big, but if you do not have a lot of items to protect, and have a desire to keep it hidden, an in-floor safe is a good option.

For a small family or single person, a great option from Sentry safes is a security chest or box. They are not very big, but are perfect for protecting basic documents such as birth certificates, wills, insurance papers, passports etc. Small external hard drives or thumb drives also easily fit, though you would want to make sure that the chest is classified to protect such data since electronic media is damaged at a lower temperature than paper . They are very compact and versatile and easy to grab and take with you in an emergency. Chests are also available with waterproof seals. I found out that these are some of the most popular Sentry safes in the world!

Most everybody has certain files that must be protected, and even all the documents that we have are sometimes nice just to keep better organized in a file type system. For those of you are are super organized, a security file may be for you! More than a file cabinet, it is an actual secure file box, with the same fire and security protection of any of the full sized Sentry safes. Also available with a waterproof seal.

If you have a business with a lot of keys for different buildings or vehicles, then Sentry safes offers keyboxes. It allows you to keep all of your keys organized and color coded, as well as secure from theft in one nice, safe location. Also great for small businesses which has to move cash around are Sentry’s safeboxes. They come with removable cash trays. Both of these types of Sentry safes are key locked.

A nifty little safe that I had not seen before are Sentry safes for autos. It seems that more and more people have valuable in their cars, especially with all of the electronic gadgets available today. The auto safe is compact and fits easily underneath a seat so it is out of sight from quick hit thieves. It has a key lock and a steel cable that allows you to anchor the safe to a seat or in the trunk, so the thief cannot just grab the safe to quietly break into somewhere else.

Last but not least, and one of the coolest and innovative things to hit the market, is the fireproof and waterproof external hard drives by Sentry safes. They have direct USB connectivity to your computer so that you can keep all of your files safely backed-up. The concept of keeping your files backed-up is not new, but the extra peace of mind to know that your external hard drive is also safe from fire and water damage as well as dust and dirt is truly peace of mind that cannot be found in a regular thumb drive or hard drive. You can also just keep it on your desk, and do not have to remember to back up your files and then put your hard drive back into a regular safe, so very convenient! Developed with Maxtor, this is probably just the first of this type of product to hit the market.

After doing this research, I think that I need more than one type of safe! I like the chest safe for basic documents, the fireproof hard drive for all of our electronic media (especially since we have so many digital family photos that I would hate to lose), and an auto safe for the valuable items we seem to often have with us in the car. So, of all the Sentry safes, which ones are best for you?

MJ writes for ClickShops Inc., which offers a great selection of Sentry safes at www.gunsafes.com.

The Truth About Pepper Spray and Tazers

Recently I was researching a couple of things and one of the things I came up with was quite extraordinary. Well, it was extraordinary to me anyway but I will let you decide for yourself.

I was trying to decide what was best, using pepper spray or using a tazer. Since I love to provide my readers with good information on such things I dug a little deeper and here is what I found.

If you want to buy pepper spray or a tazer here is what you should look for. Pepper spray is a self defense weapon and tazers are self defense weapons, obvious. When you get pepper sprayed it hurts and when you get tazered it hurts, still obvious. The one thing however is that most people decided to use pepper spray over tazers any day of the week. This was kind of a shock to me but started to make sense after I looked at the facts. So let me show you what I came up with.

Whether you have pepper spray or a tazer you have to make sure it is something you are comfortable using in a dangerous situation. If you aren’t comfortable you can find yourself in more trouble than you were in when you started.

Tazers are great for people that like to buy cartridges of H2O and carry a bulky gun type weapon in their purse or pocket.

Pepper spray on the other hand requires none of that and is usually small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

Tazers do shoot two prong like dart into your assailants flesh causing severe paralysis but at the same time require you to get somewhat close. Tazers also only have a short effect on the victims. When they are darted they will go down but they have a much faster recovery time than they would have had with pepper spray.

If you spray someone with pepper spray you can pretty much guarantee they are down for the count for at least twenty minutes. Pepper spray is so potent and effective it is used on dogs, bears and anything else you can think of spraying if you feel in danger.

I usually like to recommend pepper spray when someone asks me what self defense weapon I should use. When you add up all the pros vs. cons regarding the two products it is pretty relevant what you should do. Go with something that is light weight, small enough to fit in your pocket, and VERY effective. So if you’re looking for all those traits in a self defense product, pepper spray is the way to go.

Choosing a Nanny Cam System to Protect Your Child

A nanny cam is a hidden camera system that you can use to keep an eye on your child’s caretaker while you are away. Using a nanny cam, you can learn valuable information about how your child is being treated when you are unable to be present. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a nanny cam system.

One decision you will need to make is whether to use a wired or a wireless nanny cam system. A wired system allows for a greater distance (over 1000 feet) between the hidden camera and the display or recording device. Wireless systems, on the other hand, are limited to a distance of a few hundred feet when transmitting through walls and ceilings. Wireless systems are much easier and quicker to install. If at all possible, use a wireless system - in most home installations the distance limitation is not a problem.

When using a wireless nanny cam system, there are several other factors to consider. For the highest quality video signal and reduced interference, look for a system that uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band. Also, look for a deal with an included 2.4GHz receiver - you will have to purchase one separately if it is not included. Look for a rechargeable battery pack in the hidden camera for ease of installation and operation.

Another factor that needs to be considered is the type of hidden camera to use in your nanny cam system. Due to advances in technology, small, easily-concealed cameras have become available at a reasonable price. Because of this fact, there are dozens of hidden cameras available disguised as or hidden in some other object. Hidden cameras are available disguised as a teddy bear, a functional alarm clock, a functional smoke detector, and a functional can opener for the kitchen. These devices are wireless, require almost no installation, and are nearly impossible to detect - they act, look and feel like the real thing.

You will also need some type of display or recording device to complete your nanny cam system. If someone is available to view the display while your nanny is present (for example if you are in another part of the home during the day), you can use an existing TV to display the images from your child’s room. Just plug the output of the receiver into an extra video input on the TV. If you are away during the day, and for continuous monitoring, consider using a VCR or DVR. You can use a VHS VCR is you need to record no more than 4-6 hours at one time. For longer recording times and better results, consider using a DVR. Models are available that are PC-based. Or packages are available that allow you to use your existing home PC. Choose a DVR with network capability and you can view your nanny cam images at the office in real time via the Internet.

You can see by now that there are a number of factors to consider when choosing and using a nanny cam system. Look for a nanny cam system at a business that specializes in home security equipment so that you can take advantage of their experience to help you make this important decision.

Going on Vacation? Secure Your Home!

Secure your home while you’re away and you will be thankful you did! There are a number of home security systems available today. Home security and fire safety are two things you should always discuss when moving into a new home or opening a new business. Fire safety is a number one issue that is rarely discussed in the home or office, so it is important that you and family or employees discuss how to exit the home/office in the event of an emergency.

Getting a security alarm system is very beneficial to keeping your family/office protected from thefts. Security alarm systems are very advanced and can be connected to your local police and fire stations. If the alarm is tripped, the police/fire station will be contacted and will call your home to make sure everything is ok. If you do not respond, they will send over officers/firemen to investigate the situation. This type of alarm system is wonderful and can make your family feel extremely safe. It is important to note that security alarms that function in this manner usually cost an extra fee to have the police or fire station to respond. But isn’t it worth it to have your family or business safe from theft or fire?

If you have a large home or business, investing in a security surveillance system is ideal. Security surveillance systems can be wired the same way as a regular alarm, yet also include video panels so that you can keep watch over every inch of your home or business. The ability to watch over your entire home or business is a great tool and an even better investment. But only purchase something of this magnitude if you have an extremely large home or business where there can be many parts that are unseen on a daily basis.

Once you secure your home or business with the best security alarm available, why not take a trip to the south? Heading to a great vacation spot like Florida will be just what the doctor ordered. Many people go to Disney World, but why not try Jacksonville or Tallahassee? These are great cities and have wonderful tourist attractions. Jacksonville is a vibrant city and is home to a US naval base. Tallahassee is home to the great Florida State University. If those places don’t spark your interest, then visit other great cities in Florida!

Building An Emergency Kit

Living in the South means that every year I have to deal with the threat of hurricanes and tornados. Not always am I personally affected by these natural disasters - but it is always a possibility.

Since the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina I have made sure that not only am I prepared for what might happen - but that everyone else is as well. It is important for everyone to be made aware of how to create an emergency and survival kit.

Many people think that if you put together a survival kit you are overreacting and a little nuts. It’s time to stop caring about what people think and do something that will keep you and your family safe. When it comes to being safe you should not think about other people. Instead of wearing the rose colored glasses and hoping that nothing bad will ever happen get real and be prepared.

This doesn’t mean that you should be afraid that there is something bad around every corner. It just means that you understand how fickle the world is and that things can happen spur of the moment. Just think of it like keeping band aids in the house at all times. You don’t keep them there because you are afraid - but just so that you are prepared.

When it comes to survival kits you need to make sure that you have one in every practical place. Not only should you have one in the home - but also inside of your car. I remember that my parents would keep a first aid kit in the car. I thought it was kind of odd - but one night there was an accident and the first aid kit was something that came in handy. The kit you have for your car should contain bandages, gauze, and band aids to name a few.

Your survival and emergency kit at home should have more to it and should be larger so that it can help the whole family. Make sure that you keep this emergency kit in a safe area so that it won’t get destroyed and so that you can grab it easily. The kit should contain water, food, sanitation, first aid, short wave radio, supplies to communicate with others, lighting, and a shelter.

The supplies you purchase need to be able to be stored and to work without any electricity or running water. This means that any communication supplies and radios should use batteries instead of plugs so you will have to stock up on those as well. The food you get should be canned or dry and should have a late expiration date so they don’t spoil fast. Make sure that you store plenty to last the whole family for a few days and anyone else you might take in.

It is more than likely that you will have to live in the shelter for a few days or even a week. Because of this you will need to store thermal blankets that help to retain body heat and keep people warm, emergency sleeping bags, candles, toilet bags, duct tape, waterproof matches, and work gloves.

You can find emergency blankets online or at most outdoor stores. They have many different types and usually they will be able to keep you and your family warm when necessary.

Emergency Sleeping Bags are important to keep around the house and in your car. To make sure you get the right kind visit The Sleeping Bag.

8 Tips to Help Prevent Unnecessary Fire Damage

1. Watch Outlets
Overloaded outlets commonly cause House and office fires. To be safe, always have a circuit breaker and keep an eye on how many watts you’re plugging in. If your house is old, you should have the electrical wiring checked every couple of years for safety.

2. Drape Carefully
Many fabrics and fabric coatings are highly flammable. Always check the flammability of curtains before hanging them anywhere near a floor or ceiling heater vent. It doesn’t even take a spark to light highly flammable material, some can catch flame just by direct hot heat.

3. Store Paper
Having stacks of paper laying around if a fire occurs can make a small fire a big fire in no time. The less paper you have out, the higher chance you have of stopping a fire before it really starts. Storing papers in filing cabinets or drawers is a great way to stay organized and safe at the same time.

4. Check Old Appliances
Old appliances such as old coffee makers, toasters, or even computers can be a dangerous fire hazard. Update your appliances immediately if they begin to smell smoky or work much less well. In addition, unplug any appliance after you’re done using it and store it away properly.

5. Don’t Smoke
Lit cigarettes dropped, improperly extinguished, or forgotten indoors cause a big chunk of house fires. Allowing smoking indoors is inviting a fire hazard right into your home. By having a smoking area outside with an appropriate ashtray you could be saving yourself from danger and stress in the future.

6. Fireproof Garden
Dry bushes, brush and plants around your home can also be quite a fire hazard. Water plants regularly to keep them safe, or remove promptly if you decide not to keep them any longer. Be sure not to have any vegetation near a fireplace or other source of heat within the home.

7. Check Your Roof
The most vulnerable part of you home during a fire is your roof. As the heat and smoke raises it will get trapped under the roof, until it caves in to the heat and flame. The more stable your roof, the better chance your house has. Fiberglass, concrete tile, clay, metal and slate are all great choices, while wood, shingles or slate are more apt to collapse in a fire.

8. Put Away Matches
Children and cats alike get curios with new objects. For this reason, put anything flammable or dangerous away at all times. Matches, gas, oil and lighters should all be stored safely, high up somewhere. Be sure to teach children thoroughly about fire dangers.

Low cost home security and privacy protection with cheap blinds

Everyone in this day and age is concerned about protecting their privacy and the privacy of their families. Intruders try to pry into the private lives of people both by way of stealing their data, their identities and even their private movements and the privacy of their families. Needless to say, the privacy protection industry is booming to keep these anti-social elements away from people and their private lives.

While there are sophisticated and very expensive ways in which you can protect yourself and your family, the simplest of these is installing cheap blinds in your windows and sliding glass doors. In addition to saving energy and offering some sort of aesthetic beauty to your interior decor, these window and door blinds actually create a physical barrier to the propagation of light and therefore offer privacy to your living quarters. And yet many people simply install curtains for their windows and sliding glass doors and think that is sufficient. Curtains and screens may sway in the movement of air generated by fans and such and that movement creates enough space through which an intruder with a powerful set of binoculars can look inside your room. On the other hand, because of the weight of even the cheapest blinds, they do not sway by any significant amount and can hence provide you with a higher level of privacy protection.

The Problem with Home Intruder Alarms

Research has proven that alarms are easy for professional burglar to disarm or get around them. Burglar alarms are good to have but the above mentioned fact can be a serious issue when it comes to the protection of your family and personal belongings. The homeowner sometimes forgets to turn on the burglar alarm and doe not lock windows and doors. Technology cannot help if basic protective necessities are not utilized.

The one day that you forget to turn the alarm on could be the day a criminal enters into your home and does some house cleaning. People can cash in on an error of this nature. The professional burglar is familiar with the alarms and can find their way around them. Even the most expensive alarm on the market cannot help you if you fail to set it.

Home alarms are not activated unless all windows and doors are closed properly. The control panel requires a password to turn it on or off. Deactivating the unit is just as important as activating it. If the alarm goes off when you are entering it may alert the authorities erroneously.

It doesn’t take much time for a home to be burglarized. A burglar can get away with your things within 15 minutes. Sometimes burglars work as a team but usually they work single-handedly. The professional burglar always does research first to decide where and when to strike next. Burglars don’t strike homes they do not know; they will study the home first. They even research alarm systems to see how they operate. From the shadows, they will see what the password is and shut off the alarm, making way for him or her to enter the home. Once the alarm is off the burglar enters the home and does the job.

The burglar immediately leaves the scene of the crime if he or she accidentally sets it off or move to a different area of the home. Since the alarms are loud, people will notice the break in. Many alarms immediately alert the police, so the burglar is taken aback and leaves. This technology is an excellent investment but make sure to turn the alarm on before leaving.
