Nowadays you can see netbook almost everywhere: on planes, on trains, on buses, in the classroom, etc. It’s as if this little laptop has just popped out of nowhere and became the star among students overnight.

What is a netbook actually, and what makes it so popular?

Netbook is the smaller version of a laptop, typically built with a 10-inch screen or smaller. Most of these computers run Windows or Linux and usually priced below $500. It was originally built so people will be connected to the Internet wherever they maybe.

Asustek was the first one to introduce netbooks when they launched the very first Eee PC in 2007. However, it was only in 2008 that these mini laptops exploded like wildfire and became extremely popular all over the globe. Nowadays, companies like Lenovo, HP and Dell are now venturing on the latest trend about mini laptops. Thus, netbooks are now fast rising in popularity and there is an expected 139-million netbook units that will be manufactured by 2003.

Why is there a sudden popularity for the small netbook? Perhaps the answer lies mainly in our constant quest for mobility. We want a portable device that will keep us connected to the Internet and yet be small and light enough to be carried around all day. A truly ultra-portable device that keeps us connected with family, friends and the web.

The next question you have to ask: why do netbooks make for great student laptops? If the above reasons aren’t enough, try the following:

Size – Students would have to carry along their school stuff, books, notebooks and many others, additional weight is a big deal for them. Having a very handy netbook along with the other school stuff will not be a burden at all.

Portability- Netbooks are not only small, light and compact; they are also portable – a perfect mobile device for people who are always on the go, like students who cannot afford to be out of connection with their family and friends.

Sturdiness – Almost all netbooks are designed to be tough. As we all know students are mostly careless when it comes to their school stuff. Having a netbook would be perfect since it can withstand more pressure than those regular laptops.

Battery Life – Because of their small size, you will usually get better battery life than with a regular sized laptop. This is important to the student since you may have to go all day without a chance to re-charge the battery. Long lasting battery life makes the netbook the perfect student laptop.

Performance – These computers might be small in size but specs wise many of them are still impressive. Most of these gadgets come with 1GB RAM and an Intel Atom processor. Some of the netbooks even have Solid State Hard Drives. Many of these mini-laptops can run Windows Vista or Windows 7, although performance might not be that great compared to the regular laptops.

Storage – Netbook storage will never equal those of a laptop. Typically a netbook will only carry 30 to 60 Gig hard drives but this will be enough for students.

Price – Perhaps, the main reason netbooks make the perfect student laptops is the low price. Students are usually on a very limited budget and the low price-tag is a perfect fit. Many perfectly adequate machines are now priced in the $300 to $500 range – while many good ones go for well under $300. Plus, prices are steadily dropping so almost any student can now afford a netbook.

The small form factor, portability, sturdiness, long battery life, good performance, adequate storage, these are the things that makes the netbook the best choice for students. The netbook is perfect for the classroom and the students.
