Author: The Nintendo Wii is a great device and can be a lot of fun. Proper precautions should be taken though while utilizing the device to prevent any injuries. Nintendo is continually innovating and the Nintendo Wii is a prime example of what this dedication to gaming progress can yield. Be patient, shop around and have a good time gaming. The Nintendo Wii is a great little game console, sure to occupy you for countless hours either playing Wii Sports or Twilight Princess. Going away from the “games only” approach of previous Nintendo consoles, the Wii is also a quite capable photo viewer.
The good thing for you is that the Nintendo Wii is highly anticipated, and should not have any problems living up to the hype. On the other side of things there is a major drawback that you will have to contend with. The Nintendo Wii is a highly evolved gaming system which has barely shown its capabilities. Nintendo has introduced a new way of playing games that is fun for the whole family.
Under Miyamoto’s creative direction Nintendo has never had a problem coming up with great games. But that’s not necessarily a good thing for the company. Miyamoto and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata are going to try to change that. But they’re going to do it in the weirdest, riskiest way you could think of.
Toadwarrior – You seem to forget that the video game console market was growing at a very healthy clip already before the Wii even launched. The “old model” of selling to “hard core” gamers works just fine as the number of “hard core” gamers has grown exponentially in the past 10 years (not even factoring in the Wii). As long as PS3 and XBOX do not make remotes like Wii (the remote handling is Wii’s main unique differentiator) – Wii will always get their target market -> family-based and simple game players. Wii also should always develop new and interesting games to fire up the Wii lovers’ spirit, including mine! Maybe they’re scared to lose control of the direction the market is heading? Or maybe they want to take things slow.
Released and launched in November 19, 2006, the Nintendo Wii finally hit the market with a fixed price. Yes, the Nintendo Wii price just targets $249.99, allowing the people to obtain the product without spending more than $250. However, many third-party developers simply take advantage of the console’s popularity and flood the market with copies of games originally designed for last-generation’s PlayStation 2. The result is an inundation of graphically unimpressive games with wiimote controls added on purely for novelty. Now high console demand isn’t anything new to the gaming market. The spiffy new releases for consoles generally come in waves, with large amounts of concentration on late spring/early summer (or the end of school), and early fall (or the beginning of school).
But the Wii, which is being marketed as the ideal system for newbies, made me feel like an incompetent novice. I don’t blame myself. Nintendo built the hype for their console by marketing a new control scheme which only they can seem to get to work properly. They then targeted small children, the elderly, and people with IQ’s fewer than 85 telling them that they can be gamers to. A gen-2 Wii with the features, power and video quality of a PS3 at a $600 price point could survive and continue to dominate the market if it has backward compatibility. I think that’s the main thing that hurt the PS3– PS2 compatibility took a while to work out and now costs a little more than the non-compatible system.
And it was never marketed any other way. If that bothers you, no worries. This just magnifies the focus on the struggle between the other two next-generation consoles on the market: Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. In the months of January and February, the PlayStation 3 had just barely managed to outsell its competitor, but this month Microsoft managed to prevent a three-peat by just 5,000 units.
