Earlier this week, a website called Spong.com published what appeared to be leaked images of the casing of a Playstation 3 slim model. As well as the images of the casing they also published an image of a new Playstation 3 slim retail box. If they are real, the images were probably leaked from a factory producing parts for Sony.
The images themselves certainly look real and there’s is no signs of them being photoshopped at all. If they were mock ups someone must have gone to a lot of trouble to produce them. This leads us to believe they are real.
Lawyer’s letters
A few days after publishing the PS3 slim images, Spong.com received a rather polite (but threatening) email from a Taiwanese law firm. The letter requested that they remove the article along with the images and to not tell anyone about the request or the letter.
Spong removed the images, but would not remove their article. The article just speculated about the existence of a new PS3 slim. They also refused to keep the law firm’s involvment quiet, and rightly so.
PS2 Slim & PS3 Slim
It seems a natural progression for Sony to reduce the size of the PS3, afterall it is a huge box to have sat under your TV or in your bedroom. The PS2 slim was released in 2004, 4 years after the original PS2 launch and helped Sony eek some more sales out of this machine for some years to come.
With the advent of the new PS2 slim, the slimline Playstation games console could now be installed in motor vehicles. Installing a current PS3 in a motor vehicle would take a lot of space and power. A slimline PS3 could open up this market again for Sony.
