The first thing to consider is whether you should opt for pay as you go or to get a contract. If you dont plan on using your mobile very much, apart from letting someone know youre on your way home, or to send a text message or two, then youd probably be better off choosing a phone on one of the pay as you go deals. These days you can find pretty decent handsets and while they may not be the latest models, theyll more than likely be able to take pictures and play mp3 files. On the other hand, if you plan to be a heavy user then a contract is more likely the option for you.
The major players all have enticing mobile phone deals where for a flat monthly fee youll get a fairly sizeable number of minutes or a defined number of text messages free. A thousand free text messages may sound like a lot, but you could be surprised how quickly you use them up. Be sure to ask your friends which operator they are with you may find you have free or cheaper calls and texts within your network. Another benefit of having a contract is that the range of phones is wider and more up-to-date than with the pay as you go deals. You may find that the camera on your phone will have more megapixels than your normal digital camera, or that the memory card can hold more songs than your mp3 player. Many phones also play video content, so with an internet browser where can download more content, youve practically got a mini home entertainment system in your pocket. One final piece of advice is that you may wish to buy an extra charger to keep at work. After all, you dont want the battery to run out in the middle of that YouTube clip!
