We have been hearing warnings about how dangerous fire can be, and although most of us have not experienced it, we know that it can happen to us. Since this is the case, it is only right that we take precautionary measures. All the establishments and organizations are taking the risks seriously. We see their action plans in the safety signs they install all over the building. They also have escape plans in case a fire starts. Most importantly, they have devices like fire extinguishers installed in different areas to have the chance to stop it from getting out of control.

When a fire starts, we can stop it from spreading and even contain it totally. However, we have to call for help before we do that. In order for the firefighters to get to the concerned area, someone should phone them right away. Another thing that you have to do first is to inform everyone. Hitting the fire alarm allows you to do this.

Once you have done that, there are a few assessments you have to make. These are:

1. Is the fire contained in one area only?

This is very important because extinguishers have limitations. Most can only stop fire within a few square meters. If you want to use the extinguisher, see to it that the device can take on the flames. Do not wait for the fire to grow as well. This is the reason why you have to be able to grab the extinguisher right away. You have to be able to contain the fire while it is still small.

2. Do you have the right fire extinguisher?

This makes it necessary that you are familiar with the basic types of fire extinguishers and the different fuel sources for fire. If the cause of fire is electric equipments, use those that are made for class C fire. The use of wrong type of extinguisher can lead to more problems like causing the fire to grow and spread more rapidly.

3. Do you know how to use the fire extinguisher?

Not everyone who knows what a fire extinguisher is knows how to use it. Many do not. You can learn how to use the tool by asking your local fire department. You can also attend trainings on fire safety to learn its use and more.

When using the fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS. In firefighting parlance, this means pulling out the pin, aiming for the base of the fire, squeezing the handle, and following a sweeping motion to eliminate the flames.

4. Do you have an escape plan in case you fail to stop the flames?

If you attempt to use the fire extinguisher, do it from a safe distance. See to it that you can escape it if ever your plan fails. No matter how small the fire seems to be, always have your back to the fire exit. You have to get out of there if the fire gets out of control.

Just because the extinguisher is there does not mean you have to use it when there is fire. You have to assess the situation first. Sometimes, not using the device is a safety procedure.
